Simple and Cozy: Cottage in the Netherlands in Art Nouveau Style
Glossy facades, carved roof, and impeccable geometry of this charming 140-square-meter cottage skillfully hide its impressive age.

The house is over two hundred and fifty years old, yet with the efforts of restorers it looks as if new—except for the Art Nouveau elements in the windows and roof that reveal its retro-era origins.

In Waterland, a typical Dutch suburb an hour from Amsterdam, such a design does not look outdated but instead blends organically into the local architecture.

Inside, it’s eclectic, simple, and cozy. Interior designers from real estate agency Funda worked to create a neutral and relaxed atmosphere filled with natural tones, comfortable furniture, aged decor, and rustic wood.

In such a home, industrial style would fit perfectly, and designers introduced its elements using minimalist light fixtures, cabinets, and shelves from factories, as well as coffee and dining tables made of rough-hewn wood. The look was completed with classic armchairs and mirrors—creating a cozy and soft interior.

The spacious living room and kitchen on the first floor, two bedrooms, office, and bathrooms on the second are painted in gray, beige, and terracotta tones. The neutral palette continues the natural aesthetic and greenery outside the windows, inviting relaxation.

White was chosen for wall and ceiling finishes. This approach "saves" the first-floor ceilings, drawing attention away from their modest height and heavy beams. On the second floor, all is well with the ceilings, and the roof’s geometry gives rooms a cozy attic-like feel. The designers kept the furniture and decor minimal.

One of the bedrooms, featuring a window with recognizable Art Nouveau curves, doesn’t even need additional decoration. To such a luxurious historical structure, little more can be added.
