Small Apartment in Gdansk That Looks Spacious

The 43-square-meter apartment in Gdansk was originally planned to be rented out daily, so minimal requirements were set for storage and kitchen organization. However, attention had to be paid to design and aesthetics.

The initial conditions for the design studio Fabryka Wnetrz included a living room combined with a kitchen, a separate bedroom, and a balcony. Since the apartment couldn't boast of large dimensions, its size was decided to be visually expanded— at least in appearance.

First, they chose a color palette. It is known that rooms decorated in light tones appear more spacious, so the designers opted for soft pastel shades. But they placed the main emphasis on perspective work.

A mirror panel was mounted behind the sofa in the living room area. This trick works as a powerful optical illusion: reflections in mirrors create an effect of room extension, making the space appear larger than it actually is.

The mirror trick was complemented by a photo panel in the kitchen-dining area. It depicts a picturesque street in Gdansk, leading into the distance and 'dissolving' the narrow walls of the compact apartment.

A mirror was also added to the entrance door in the hallway. It is positioned right opposite a window, providing the dark space with some daylight.

The reflection of a tile carpet in the mirror is another optical illusion, similar to those created by designers in the living room and dining area. The result is a visually longer corridor.

The final look was eclectic and multi-layered. For instance, in wall finishes, apart from mirrors and photo panels, bricks, decorative panels, and clean white surfaces were also used.

Interestingly, storage systems, which are secondary in this case, also found their place. Guests are only happy about it: not everyone travels light. Nevertheless, discovering that the apartment is more spacious than its square footage suggests is surely a pleasant surprise.
