Wall 3D Panels in Interior

This page is also available in the following languages:🇷🇺🇺🇦🇫🇷🇩🇪🇪🇸🇵🇱🇨🇳
3D panels for walls cannot be called a novelty, but for some reason they have not gained popularity in interiors. Most likely, the reason is fear of using something unusual.

Nevertheless, such decoration has many advantages. In the article we will tell what these items are and what benefits they offer, as well as give practical recommendations for their application.

What are 3D panels

Such panels are called three-dimensional wall panels. They can be square, rectangular or polygonal in shape, convex or recessed, with a pattern. Their mounting to the wall is provided by several methods: using a special composition or with the use of guiding mechanisms. The first option is only possible for perfectly flat walls, as it will be difficult to attach the item to a surface with defects, whereas attachment using special mechanisms is quite possible even on uneven surfaces.

The pattern that is ultimately obtained can be very different: abstract or imitating some material.

Universality of this type of finishing, its variety and multifacetedness of patterns make 3D panels suitable for any room in an apartment, thanks to them you can liven up the interior in almost every style. Designers should definitely pay attention to this type of finishing and use it more often in their projects.

3D panels in interior design have both advantages and disadvantages. Among the pros are:

  • use of eco-friendly materials — among the varieties of this type of finishing, there are even natural wood species such as bamboo;

  • a special coating is created that excludes the possibility of these panels catching fire, safe for placement in living spaces;

  • 3D wall panels are characterized by high strength, they are not easily damaged by impacts (which a child might accidentally inflict) or other mechanical influences, although it is certainly not necessary to test them specially;

  • this type of finishing is resistant to temperatures and does not let sound through, even at the points where it connects to the wall;

  • easy installation, if desired, one can even learn to install them independently without resorting to specialists;

  • maintaining walls decorated with 3D panels is also quite simple.

Among the drawbacks, one can only mention one point — the need to create a framework for more reliable attachment. This method creates additional volume, which is undoubtedly not very good for small rooms.

Decorative panels do not require maintaining any specific temperature in the room, they are sufficient to wipe them with a damp cloth using mild chemical cleaning agents, and even a vacuum cleaner with a brush can be used. So for those who are afraid of preserving or worried that they will have to spend money and time on maintenance, they can safely free themselves from these thoughts.

Types of 3D panels

  • Gypsum

Gypsum boards are often the basis for 3D wall panels, with their help it is easy to create an illusion of a large seamless surface. The quality properties of gypsum (ecological nature, thermal resistance) have made it a popular material for decorative panels.

  • MDF

MDF panels are among the most expensive types of finishing on the market, and this is due to the costly method of their production: it is necessary to press hot fine wood chips to get such a final material. Also, for manufacturing each type of panel, a new mold is needed, which also requires costs from the manufacturer. MDF is an eco-friendly material that is also not subject to external influences, so it is successfully used for walls.

  • Bamboo

Bamboo for 3D panels in interior design will appeal to followers of an organic lifestyle. Usually, the finish is made from crushed bamboo shoots, and besides, they are also the most affordable in price.

  • OSB

Panels made from wood-containing materials handle humidity and high temperatures well. They are made from large wood chips using the same pressing method.

  • Plastic

Polymeric materials are often the basis for manufacturing 3D wall panels, and they are often produced in different designer solutions: they can be covered with faux leather, leather or fabric.

  • Glass

Glass panels are among the most expensive in production, which affects their final cost in stores, they can significantly increase the project budget. The high price and considerable labor intensity in installation make them not very popular in modern interiors.

  • Wood

Wood is another expensive type of volumetric panels. If the material for production is soft, then such finishing is more susceptible to damage, while protecting this finish with anything other than special compositions is not possible, as the natural pattern will be lost — that's what people value about natural wood. To extend the service life of wooden panels, they are often treated with wax.

  • Aluminum

The last material in the list from which panels are made, but one of the most popular. With a perforator, it is easy to imprint a pattern on it. Manufacturers often coat aluminum with polymer film. Among the advantages of such solutions are: they rarely suffer from corrosion, already possess an artistic effect, and can be safely used in rooms where humidity is significantly elevated. For example, in bathrooms.

Usage Ideas

  • In Living Rooms

It is in this room that 3D panels for walls are most often seen. An original solution is applied to highlight the space behind soft furniture or a wall with a TV. It looks particularly well in a fireplace area with such decoration, provided that the style, texture and pattern suit the fireplace.

Depending on the chosen interior style, you can decorate a wall in different ways: create an imitation of waves, a water surface or invent any geometric shapes.

  • In the Kitchen

Kitchens are the second most popular room for using 3D panels. Preference is usually given to plastic and MDF finishing, as they are easy to maintain. Gypsum materials are usually covered with special compositions for moisture resistance, as the kitchen is a room with elevated humidity.

Decorative panels look interesting in the design of a kitchen backsplash, and they are also often used in the dining area. If there is enough square meters, you can use this type of finishing in two places to "support" the design.

  • In the Bedroom

Generally, a bedroom requires tranquility and designers' innovations are rarely used there. In most cases, the suitable place is the wall behind the headboard of the bed. It's important that the chosen design harmonizes with the room's interior. 3D panels in interiors are rarely seen on a wall opposite the sleeping area — usually there is a wardrobe with a TV or a side table.

With such finishing, you can make a panel or picture on a small section of the wall, which will look like an unusual painting — provided that it harmonizes and pleases the homeowners.

  • In a Child's Room

Some brands offer a range of 3D panels for children's rooms. They can look like Lego cubes, come in different colors and geometric shapes. Thanks to decorative finishing, you can turn a child's room into a fairy-tale castle or, on the contrary, a superhero world. The options are endless, limited only by the parents' imagination. If you think that help is needed, you can always invite a designer who will optimally use the space, including on walls.

Where to apply? You can decorate a wall near the bed or a play area. Children usually like everything bright and interesting, and if the finishing resembles a favorite character from a cartoon or book, they will definitely be delighted.

  • In the Bathroom

Volumetric panels in a bathroom? Yes, it is possible. Usually, they are used locally, i.e., highlighting a particular wall in bathrooms. Of course, for this room, it should not be too small, so such stylistic solutions are more often seen in combined bathrooms. If they are separate, there is usually not much space, and volumetric figures on the walls only steal more of it.

A bathroom always has high humidity, so when choosing materials, you need to consider safety and compliance with operating conditions. The best choice would be panels made from aluminum, as mentioned above, they have the most optimal resistance to humidity.

3D panels in interior design are a bold designer's decision, and there is no need to fear applying them in an apartment or house project. Contemporary domestic interiors are characterized by conservatism, people often fear resorting to something new and unusual, but later they encounter the problem of a stale style. Volumetric decorative panels on the wall will always look interesting and add "freshness" to the interior.
