What Are Latticed Doors: Features of the Design

The interior of a room is not only based on the combination of color and various forms, but also on other elements that allow you to give the space a finished and distinctive look

These "extras" can appear as standalone accessories, such as vases, figurines, paintings, or as part of furniture and door ensembles. Today we will talk about one such accessory - latticed doors, which have become increasingly popular with designers for creating interesting interior solutions.

Latticed Door: What It Is and Where It's Used

To begin with, we need to understand why this product received such a name. Originally, a lattice (филенка) is a thin insert in wooden panels, most commonly used on interior doors. In other words, it is a sheet of plywood, wood, glass, MDF, or HDF installed as a decorative element. Lattices can vary in shape and size, differ in color from the main panel. What is most important - if one of them gets damaged, it's not necessary to replace the entire door; it is enough to simply replace the damaged section.

This approach allows creating non-standard forms and transforming a boring door into an original piece where each lattice highlights specific parts of the door. It can contain patterns, textured grouts, three-dimensional elements and much more. Everything depends on the designer's imagination.

The use of latticed doors has no limits; they can be found not only in residential homes but also in offices, public places, and entrance halls. The material of the inserts themselves varies depending on the purpose of the rooms and requirements for durability of the lattices.

Advantages and Disadvantages

As with any door set, latticed doors have their own advantages and disadvantages. Let's identify the main ones.

Firstly, it's an aesthetically pleasing appearance that allows adding any interior and making it finished due to its versatility.

Secondly, it significantly reduces the weight of the door panel by using thinner material sheets for lattices. This point is useful for those who plan to order non-standard items with large surface areas, whose weight could damage door hinges.

Thirdly, as stated above, latticed doors are easier to restore and repair since they resemble a puzzle - one piece can be replaced without touching the others.

Fourthly, lattices prevent the door panel from cracking and therefore increase its service life, which cannot be said for solid wood pieces.

Finally, latticed doors are much cheaper than their analogs because less material and expensive parts are used in their production.

There aren't many drawbacks to such door panels, mainly related to using raw materials that don't meet production standards. But this happens extremely rarely.

Construction Features

All products have a similar structure - their basis is a frame made of lumber to which lattices are attached.

The frame consists of 3 main crossbeams (bottom, center, and top), side beams with hinges and locks, and centerpieces (beams between lattices).

Materials of Manufacture

The most expensive ones are made from valuable wood species. They have increased strength due to both material characteristics and non-standard attachment of lattices to the panel. In addition to standard species like oak, beech, teak, walnut, and others, latticed doors can also be made from more exotic woods like mahogany. In some cases, exotic species are imitated using special lacquers.

For those who like to save money but prefer solid natural materials, soft wood species are suitable. They are strong enough to serve owners for a long time but not as expensive as valuable woods. Constructions made from soft wood are suitable for rooms where traffic is not very high or doors are only used at certain times, such as on a cottage. Despite their affordable cost, they are treated with special anti-corrosive and anti-fungal compositions and, at the customer's request, are coated with pigment lacquer that allows achieving the desired shade of wood. Even after such manipulations, the panel looks natural and impressive.

Combined doors imply a combination of inexpensive materials and good finishing. The first point makes the door attractive to buyers, while the second allows using it in various design solutions. Perhaps this option will not last several decades in a row, but it becomes an excellent addition to the interior under strict economic conditions.

Main Varieties of Lattices

Modern lattices are very diverse due to various design solutions. Shape, size, relief, painting, and much more become ideal tools for decoration. Thus, all latticed doors are divided into three main groups:

  • Doors with lattices made from valuable wood species - oak, teak, walnut, and others. In this case, dowel-joint fastening is used, which increases the overall strength of the panel.

  • With lattices made from soft wood species (birch, pine, etc.)

  • With combined lattices made from MDF, particle board, and plywood. They are laminated at the factory and covered with veneer. These doors are the cheapest, which made them the most popular on the market. They also include doors with glass inserts.

Decorative Finishing of Doors

A large assortment of materials is used to make latticed panels, which allows creating constructions of any complexity and design. Interior doors usually involve a combination of wood and glass in matte or transparent finish, whereas bathroom doors use solid panels.

Coatings can be processed to create a particular texture or color, such as wood being treated with stain and lacquer, while plywood is covered with film, veneer, or laminate.

The shape of the inserts can also vary - figurative elements are characteristic of classical styles, while straight and simple forms suit modern design solutions better.

How to Choose a Latticed Door

First, determine where exactly the door will be installed. If you're buying a panel for an urban apartment - choose options with aluminum frames, the top of which is made from hard or valuable wood species. For cottage constructions, doors made from coniferous woods that manufacturers coat with anti-corrosive coating and special lacquer, preserving the natural color of the material, are suitable.

The design of the finishing is also important. If you're a fan of modern styles, choose lattice colors that match the panel; if the style of the room is classical, you can experiment with glass lattices and darker-toned inserts.

When purchasing inexpensive doors, it's better to choose MDF models, which last longer than wooden analogs because they react less to humidity and temperature fluctuations.

Care Rules for the Door

Door care mainly consists of cleaning. Avoid using abrasive substances containing chlorine, cleaning pastes and gels with micro-grains - they can eat away the surface of the door and leave scratches. It's better to wipe the panel with a soft, fuzzy fabric. The ideal option is a solution of alcohol and water (1:10), which perfectly removes oils from the surface and is gentle on the door coating.

If lattices in the door are made from glass and you use a special cleaning agent for this material, try not to get it on the surface of the main panel.
