World of the Child: 6 Reasons to Decorate a Child's Room According to Feng Shui
Reason #1: Properly Define the Child's Place in the Family Hierarchy
The best location for a child's bedroom is away from the main entrance but not farther than the parents' bedroom. The size of the child's room should be strictly smaller than that of the parents' bedroom. Following these rules, you can instill in your child a proper understanding of their place in the family hierarchy.
The optimal orientation of the room by compass directions is east or southeast in the northern hemisphere (east and northeast in the southern hemisphere). A rectangular shape is more preferred: it represents a more dynamic energy that suits growing children. If the child's room is square-shaped (representing static energy), it is preferable to functionally divide it into two rectangular parts (e.g., by a bookshelf).

Reason #2: Gently Adjust the Child's Character
For newborns, the space should be more yin-like, i.e., calm and cozy, with soft lighting and pleasant surfaces; vibrant colors should be saved for later. For growing children, active energy is needed: the color palette can be rich, and lighting should also be brighter. The preferred color palette is in shades of green. For girls, warm red tones can be accentuated (a girl represents yin energy, decor – yang energy), while for boys, cool blue tones are preferred (a boy represents yang energy, decor – yin energy).
However, do not blindly follow color recommendations: every child is unique and, depending on their character, you can choose what will adjust their personality. For example, for a temperamental and hyperactive child, more yin energy can be added to the interior – soft surfaces, monochromatic curtains and blankets in cool colors, smooth lines, static patterns, dim lighting. For a passive and sluggish child, on the contrary, more active yang energy is needed – warm colors, smooth surfaces, blinds, bright but not dazzling light, paintings, music, furniture on wheels, straight lines, dynamic patterns.

Reason #3: Create a Comfortable Atmosphere in the Child's Room
The main principles of feng shui for a child’s bedroom are almost the same as those for adult bedrooms, with only minor differences. The placement of the bed (including a changing table) is preferably in the far end of the room, diagonally from the entrance, but not opposite the door. This is the most peaceful and energy-rich area.
If you have two or more children, bunk beds are less preferred than individual beds. However, if there is no other option, it is better for children to alternate sleeping on the top and bottom beds.
It is preferable not to place children's beds opposite each other. These arrangements can foster a spirit of competition and dominance between children. It is important to emphasize each child’s individuality, for example, by using their favorite color, initials, hobby-related accessories, and favorite toys. Ask your child what they like and don’t like – they will be happy to participate in the creative process, and this will give you direction for inspiration and finding a design solution.

Reason #4: Make Child Rearing More Effective
It is important to divide the child’s room into functional zones – a sleeping zone, play zone, and work zone (in preschool age, the work zone is a drawing table, clay modeling table, or tabletop games station). The play zone should be clearly defined so that the child perceives it as their personal space, where nothing and no one restricts them, unlike in other rooms. This will help teach the child to respect others' space and not scatter toys throughout the house.
Next to the play zone, provide convenient enclosed storage for toys so that opening and closing toy boxes symbolizes the beginning and end of playtime. Regularly get rid of toys that the child no longer plays with or has outgrown.
The golden rule of feng shui is to timely clear the space from old energy of unnecessary items so that the energy does not stagnate and constantly refreshes. Unwanted toys can be donated to small friends or those who need them more. Take this as a rule and involve the child in this process, teaching them to make choices, make decisions, and be generous. Proper organization of the play zone can greatly help in child-rearing.

Reason #5: Improve School Performance
Do not place the study desk next to the bed: these pieces of furniture represent yang and yin functions, respectively, and should be located in different functional zones of the room. Following this rule, the child will not accumulate a feeling of fatigue and will not become lazy.
Ensure that no shelves or heavy items hang above the workspace: they will oppress the child. Also, do not position the desk so that the child sits with their back to the door – this placement will affect their academic performance and concentration. Facing the window also tends to distract the child from studies. If the child sits facing a wall, hang something that will aid in learning and not distract: a multiplication table, a geography map, or an English alphabet chart.

Reason #6: Form a Harmonious Inner World in the Child
Natural materials are preferable for decorating a child's room. Pay attention to ensuring that the room’s decoration does not contain dangerous or sharp objects. Mirrors are also not recommended for a child's room.
Do not overcrowd the room with too much furniture: there should be lots of free space in a child's room. This principle corresponds to yang energy, which dominates in a child’s bedroom. A TV in the child's room is not desired. It is better if the child watches TV under parental supervision. Be careful with images in the child’s room. They should be realistic (not distorted), not evoke sad emotions, fears, or uncertainty about their potential. Even though this is a symbolic influence, it can be strong and ultimately affect the child's inner world.
