The popularity of studios and open-plan layouts is growing day by day, along with the number of questions about their decoration. While rooms are more or less clear, decorating a hallway often confuses people. Should the door open directly into the living room? Or should you build a couple of walls? Today we'll talk about ways to decorate and organize a hallway where there's no dedicated space for it.

1. Separate the Hallway Zone with Furniture

A sofa facing inward can visually divide the room into zones. The hallway will be clearly defined, while the space remains open and free. The same can be done with a couple of armchairs.

If you place a narrow console table or dresser behind the sofa, the hallway becomes more functional. You can store shoes and accessories in the dresser, and use the table as a desk or dining table when needed. The surface of the table or dresser can be used to store keys and accessories. Or set up a Swedish buffet with snacks when friends drop by.

2. Define the Hallway Zone with a Short and Low Wall

If the entrance door is located at one of the corners of the room, you can build a small low wall to separate the hallway from the rest of the space. It creates necessary separation while keeping the space open and free.

3. Create a Hallway Zone with Flooring

Zone separation using floor coverings and rugs works well for defining a hallway. Determine the area that will be occupied by the hallway, and lay a carpet of the appropriate size or tile or laminate with a different color or texture from the rest of the floor. This solution not only visually highlights the hallway but also prevents dirt from entering from outside.

4. Use Double Doors

The second door acts as a mobile divider of space. It can be opened when privacy is needed or closed to make the living area more open.

5. Define the Hallway Zone with a Shelf

A shelf is an excellent way to separate not only functional zones in the room but also define a hallway. It's more functional than a wall since it can be used to store various items. A closed shelf creates more private zones, while an open one can be used from both sides – from the hallway and from the living room.

6. Use Screens to Create a Hallway

Screens and dividers usually have semi-transparent structures that don't create solid walls. There are many options to separate the hallway and give your apartment a unique style and individuality.

7. Don't Separate the Hallway from the Rest of the Space

If your apartment layout and lifestyle don't require a hallway, there's no need to overthink it. Simply install hooks or shelves for keys and small items – and your hallway is ready.

8. Build a Hallway

Finally, perhaps the most radical solution of all – actually building a separate room for the hallway. If you understand that you need a hallway, for example, your studio apartment is very small and entering it means you walk straight into the bedroom – consider building walls.

To create a more open space and visual lightness, you can use stained glass and frosted opaque glass for walls and doors.
