Design of a Two-Room Khrushchyovka Apartment (PHOTOS)

Apartment: 2-room, 3rd floor of a 5-story khrushchyovka building (series 1-335). Client's wishes: it is necessary to expand the space by combining the kitchen and living room, increase the area of the bathroom and separate a room for a child.

We recommend the article: design of a living room in a khrushchyovka

Plan 1 — Khrushchyovka after re-planning (apartment design plan)

For owners of standard apartments, the desire to expand the space by combining rooms is almost standard. Unlike most other orders, this client wanted additional space in the bathroom as well, which was implemented (by adding a small corridor leading to the kitchen, the precious square meters were attached to the bathroom). Further, standard work was performed: the door of the child's room was moved, and a wall between the kitchen and living room was demolished.

Photo 2 — After re-planning, a narrow and long corridor was created leading to the door of the child's room. It was visually expanded using light colors and mirror surfaces

The complexity in working on this project was not so much in the re-planning of a typical apartment, but rather in finding a compromise in interior design style: the homeowner preferred modern style, while her husband opted for classic style using natural materials and finishing colors. Both made compromises, choosing the nautical style as a compromise option: in this style, natural finishes and colors are combined with the latest trends in interior design—photographs on walls (see photos below) and glossy surfaces reflecting light to visually expand the space.

Photo 4 — Glossy ceiling and floor visually expand the space, playing with light and reflections

Photo 5 — Another small trick from Evgenia Magницкая — flying birds on the sliding doors of the kitchen-living room set the direction 'up', which also makes the eye perceive the space as larger than it actually is

Photo 6 — A column with a painted fireplace serves as a kind of boundary between the kitchen and living room. If desired, the painting can be replaced with a decorative electric fireplace, but unfortunately, it's not possible to install a real one in a khrushchyovka

Photo 7 — The dining area, where bright yellow wall clocks and pendants continue the theme of the sea and amber thrown onto hot sand. The color of this precious stone can also be seen on the opposite wall in a nautical landscape

Photo 8 — In the child's room, the nautical style of the common room is expressed more strongly in the room finishing. Otherwise, it's a standard design for a student's room in grades 6-7

Photo 9 - Waves on the ceiling and walls are not only tied to the overall style of the apartment, but also an excellent way to hide surface defects (irregularities, cracks, traces from grooves).

Photo 10 — Wall painting with perspective in the child's room visually makes the space more interesting and larger

Photo 11 — For bathroom tiling, rough-textured tiles were chosen that imitate sea sand and stone in the interior.
