Situated at 960 meters above sea level in the mountains above Aal, Norway, V-Lodge by Reiulf Ramstad Architects is a 120-square-meter family home designed for year-round living. Completed in 2013, this retreat demonstrates a harmonious blend of contemporary Scandinavian minimalism and deep respect for the natural landscape.

Design Based on Terrain

The unique V-shaped building layout consists of two sloped volumes connected at a 45-degree angle. One wing contains the entrance, kitchen, dining area, and living space oriented along the contours of the terrain. The other wing descends along the slope and includes three bedrooms, a bathroom, and a youth area. This configuration allows the structure to seamlessly integrate into the natural topography, creating a smooth transition between interior and exterior spaces.

Simplicity of Materials and Warmth

The exterior cladding of V-Lodge is made from untreated short pine wood, which will naturally weather over time into the surrounding birch forest. Inside, walls and ceilings are lined with pine plywood, while a concrete element cast on-site combines the fireplace and kitchen countertop. This minimalist palette of materials creates a warm, cohesive interior that emphasizes craftsmanship and connection with nature.

Perfect Integration with the Landscape

Fully glazed openings throughout the structure provide ample natural light and unobstructed views of the surroundings. At the junction of both wings, a curved glass corner offers panoramic vistas and serves as a contemplative spot. The design creates micro-climate zones around the house, expanding opportunities for outdoor living and strengthening the home's connection with its environment.
