Modern Perspective on Tradition

The Urban Courtyard Home, designed by Sudaiva Studio, transforms a 6,000 sq ft residential house in Bangalore into a poetic reinterpretation of traditional Indian courtyard home typology. Built on a 4,000 sq ft urban plot, the project combines contemporary lifestyle needs with time-tested architectural solutions based on openness, greenery, and multi-level spatial experiences.

Concept and Layout

The design rethinks the idea of a courtyard: instead of being central, the courtyard is shifted, creating a series of interconnected rooms at different levels. This change forms carefully proportioned volumes and enhances the flow between spaces, giving each room a unique view of the green heart of the house.

Most rooms maintain an intimate connection to the private courtyard, highlighting the introverted quality of the home. However, this sense of seclusion is balanced by balconies and terraces that interact with urban life and vegetation beyond the plot, ensuring the house feels both internally secluded and connected externally.

Architectural Form and Facade

The home's architectural identity is based on internal volumes and levels, visible from the outside. Key design elements include:

  • A 14-foot main door, aligned with an 8-foot leading terrace street, creating a striking vertical rhythm.

  • A slanted RCC slab covered with recycled teak, emphasizing horizontality and strengthening the facade.

  • Horizontal wooden slats and custom gate design, enhancing the linear aesthetic.

  • Perforated metal screens, contrasting with the hardness and warmth of wood, providing lightness and permeability.

Materials and Interiors

The dwelling combines hard and refined materials for a layered design:

  • External concrete finishes are interrupted inside, connecting with white plastered walls for contrast.

  • Italian marble floors and natural elements from teak wood bring elegance and warmth.

  • Rooftop windows and large glazing provide filtered natural light and framed views of the garden, making each space harmonious.

Interiors are intentionally immersed in nature, maintaining a direct connection to the courtyard and exterior greenery. Integrated furniture elements, such as steps woven into the sofa design, demonstrate a seamless blend of architecture and interior.

Home for Modern Urban Living

The Urban Courtyard Home is both a tribute to Indian courtyard tradition and a reflection of modern lifestyle. It offers its residents a private sanctuary in the city, where garden views, diffused natural light, and layered materials create a serene yet dynamic architectural narrative.
