Respect for Heritage and Aspirations toward the Future

The Preston House 01 by Hill Ryan Architects presents a thoughtful blend of respect for heritage and modern innovation. Located in the heart of Melbourne, the project involved restoring a historical California bungalow, as well as extending the rear portion of the building to create a modern home for a young family.

The design pays tribute to the object's history, especially through the restoration of salvaged bricks from the original addition. This approach not only reduced waste but also gave the new structure character and memory of the old construction.

Brick as an Architectural Language

A feature of the extension is a series of visible 350mm thick brick walls. These substantial, tactile elements are softened by carefully integrated Windows, glass doors and openings, which fit between them. Upon entering the extension, the original corridor dramatically opens into a new space with brick finish, offering both continuity and contrast.

Two prominent walls mark the boundary between old and new. Behind them, a 3.3-meter high pivot door floods the kitchen, dining area and living room with natural light, creating a seamless transition to the garden. Wooden ceilings above echo the corridor's continuation, closing off the glass facade and ensuring year-round comfort.

Dynamic Loft and Ceiling Design

The roof structure enhances the multi-level experience of the extension. Floating roof forms are visually separated from the walls using light wells, which let light into the interior.

Inside, spatial differences define the atmosphere. Low ceilings at 2.6 meters in the kitchen and living room create a cozy feel, while the lounge and dining area have heights up to 3.3 meters. Such precise variation creates contrast and dynamism, highlighting the sense of movement through a house that evolves according to its functions.

Materials and Atmosphere

To balance the solidity of the exposed brick, architects introduced blackbutt timber ceilings, warm concrete floors and soft interior finishes. Recycled bricks, painted to emphasize texture, add a gentle character without overwhelming the space.

Interior details enrich the architecture:

  • Suspended pendant lights create a cozy ambiance above the dining area.

  • Dark timber and soft green kitchen furniture soften the modern style of the kitchen.

  • Concrete flooring provides a foundation for the spaces, ensuring durability and warmth for family life.

The result is a house that feels solid yet inviting — a calm, expressive space, designed specifically for a growing family.

An Adaptive Design Model of Heritage

With the Preston House 01, Hill Ryan Architects demonstrate how preserving heritage and modern life can coexist harmoniously. By connecting recycled materials, tangible surfaces, and bright interiors, the project transforms a dated bungalow into an eco-friendly, family home, continuing the story of the past while embracing the future.
