Planar House by DADA Partners: Concrete Geometry Meets Biophilic Harmony in New Delhi
Sharp Geometry, Softened by Nature
The planar house by DADA Partners is located in a quiet spot on an acre-sized, well-maintained plot in New Delhi, but its architectural tone is by no means modest. Completed in 2023, the 15,000 square foot home explores a dramatic combination of monolithic concrete planes, layered lighting, and biophilic design, creating a sanctuary that is both majestic and deeply connected to its surroundings.
Planar Volumes and Poetic Shadows
The house derives its name from its layered planar structure, defining its bold architectural identity. Concrete walls with on-site casting and muted plaster finishes intersect, forming deep spatial voids where light and shadow patterns play.
The F-shaped design welcomes the sunset on the western entrance area, while also embracing eastern inner courtyards to let morning light into living spaces. This layout ensures privacy, sunlight control, and a serene spatial composition.
First Floor: Sculptural Living and Cozy Zones
Each part of the first floor is designed to support family life, privacy, and sensory richness:
-
Western entrance area and living room: Defined by two monumental concrete walls, the formal entry opens to a glass lobby and sunny living room.
-
Tropical courtyard: Hidden between the living room and bedroom, this garden corner cools the interiors and offers a moment of calm amidst urban hustle.
-
Bedroom: A protective wall ensures maximum privacy while maintaining visual connection to nature.
-
Dining and family living room: The central volume includes a two-story living room, an open dining hall, and a smooth stairway hallway all oriented toward the eastern water courtyard, filled with blooming trees and sunlight.
Second Floor: Elevated Views and Artistic Reflection
The upper level includes four bedrooms and a central studio space, which functions as an artistic workspace and office. Above the family living room, the studio opens to a private terrace, offering views of the eastern courtyard.
Here, light, texture, and silence converge to support creativity and tranquility.
Landscape: Meditative and Functional
Outside the building, the planar house includes outdoor elements that extend its concept of balance and integration:
-
Meditative pyramid: A small glass pavilion designed for solitude and reflection in a forested corner of the plot.
-
Pool pavilion: A guardhouse with a bar, gym, and changing rooms surrounds the tropical pool, ideal for year-round relaxation.
A Model for Biophilic Urban Housing
The planar house embodies biophilic principles, transforming structural mass into a framework for watery elements, rich plant cover, and natural lighting. Each room was strategically placed to maximize views, fresh air flow, and comfort.
-
Reflective pools: Naturally cool the air and soften sharp edges.
-
Courtyards with landscape integration: Serve as microclimates and visual anchors.
-
Natural ventilation: Minimizes reliance on mechanical systems.
Together, these strategies create a house that breathes and responds—a rare achievement in densely built urban areas.
A Testament to Material Mastery
Through a sophisticated palette of textured concrete, hardened plaster finishes, and organic landscapes, the house exudes a sense of timeless durability and meditative calm. It doesn't just occupy land—it communicates with it.

It demonstrates how bold architectural language can coexist with sustainable, nature-oriented housing, creating a home that is both art and habitat.
This residence is more than just a building—it's an immersive experience offering a blueprint for modern Indian homes that honor tradition and strive for innovation.
