Noom Abidjan Plateau Hotel by SAOTA: A New Landmark in West African Hospitality
Rising above the bustling Plateau district in Abidjan, Noom Abidjan Plateau Hotel redefines luxury hospitality in West Africa. Developed by acclaimed South African architectural firm SAOTA, this 22-story skyscraper presents a contemporary interpretation of Abidjan's modernist heritage, blending global luxury standards with deep cultural roots.
Context and Artistic Concept
Abidjan, known as the 'Paris of West Africa,' boasts a rich architectural history rooted in post-independence modernism. The urban landscape is a canvas of bold forms reflecting progress and identity. Noom Hotel pays homage to this tradition, expanding it through a design that combines clean modernist lines with local craftsmanship.
The project was commissioned by Teyliom Hospitality, part of the Mangalis Hotel Group, to create a world-class hotel reflecting Abidjan's dynamism and rich cultural fabric. For SAOTA, this collaboration was an important opportunity to extend the boundaries of urban hospitality design.
Architectural Approach
The hotel's design balances the tension between global elegance and regional identity. The building facade, with its asymmetrical window placement and textured finishes, is inspired by West African textiles and crafts. These elements are integrated into contemporary architectural language, creating a facade that is both modern and contextually grounded.
The social heart of the hotel lies on the 7th floor, offering panoramic views over Laguna Ebrie. This level includes a pool, terrace, dining and entertainment zones, providing an oasis from the city's hustle. The building’s verticality is emphasized by a triple-volume entrance leading to a mixed-use basement with conference rooms and other amenities.
Climate-Responsive Design
The design responds to Abidjan's tropical climate with practical solutions. Aluminum rain screens on the facade reduce thermal load, while insulation minimizes energy consumption, creating a more sustainable and comfortable environment for guests. The interplay of light and shadow on the facade enhances its aesthetic appeal while fulfilling functional tasks.
Interior Design and Materials
Inside, the hotel blends elegance with a sense of place. Interiors are thoughtfully designed to reflect the balance between openness and intimacy, using a carefully selected palette of materials that highlight texture and depth. The seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces strengthens the connection with surrounding nature and the tranquil presence of the lagoon.
Cultural and Urban Integration
Noom Hotel is more than a luxury retreat—it's a statement about Abidjan’s evolving identity. Located in the dense and dynamic Plateau district, the hotel engages in dialogue with its urban environment. Its design translates the sense of space from low-rise Noom hotels into a vertical format, preserving openness and connection.
Conclusion
Noom Abidjan Plateau Hotel is a symbol of modern Abidjan—a beacon of architectural innovation that respects the city’s past while looking toward its future. The meticulous design by SAOTA reflects the spirit of the city in transformation, creating a space that is both timeless and forward-looking.
With its flawless blend of modernist principles, cultural sensitivity, and climate-responsive strategies, Noom Hotel occupies a place not only in Abidjan but also in West African hospitality.
