Living room-dining room design. Rarely does hosting guests not involve a shared meal. A small tea break or a noisy feast requires organizing a table and furniture to sit at it. And while sitting with a friend for a cup of tea can be done using a coffee table in the living room, having dinner for several families would be nice to spend at a large dining table in a cozy setting.

A separate dining room is a luxury that only a few can afford.

Often, the dining room is combined with the kitchen, living room, or both rooms. Before deciding on a living room-dining room design, one must ensure the feasibility and necessity of creating it based on their own living room. The actual process of creating a living room-dining room interior is not overly complex.

Where Can a Dining Area Be Organized?

The dining area can be set aside in a sufficiently large living room or a studio apartment where the living room and dining area coexist with other zones.

To create a dining zone with a large table, enough square meters must be allocated for the number of seating places planned. That is, if eight people will sit at the table, then at least eight square meters should be dedicated to the dining area from the living room.

Therefore, it makes no sense to set aside a dining zone in a small living room. This is only possible if the living room and kitchen are combined, with an eating table placed at their boundary.

How to Better Decorate the Dining Area?

Peaceful coexistence of the living room and dining area in one space does not require solid partitions. A low cabinet or shelf can be placed between soft furniture and the dining table.

Zone separation is mostly achieved through wall, ceiling, and floor finishes. The dining area should be styled in harmony with the living room but can be more vibrant — rich saturated colors stimulate appetite.

The wall section near the dining table can be covered with wallpaper of a different color, pattern, or texture.

The floors of both zones can be finished with different materials or the same material in a different color.

The dining zone can also be highlighted with lighting: several identical lamps can hang low above the table.

What Furniture to Choose for the Dining Room?

The style of the dining and living room zones can differ but should be related or similar. When choosing furniture, attention must be paid to ensuring chairs match the table; it is better to buy them as a set.

Dining room furniture includes not only the table and chairs but also, if space allows, a sideboard or buffet in the dining zone.

For a classical-style living room-dining room, carved tables and chairs in dark brown with cherry undertones can be chosen. Next to a Scandinavian-style living room, a set of bleached wood furniture would look great. A high-tech style dining room can be enhanced with a rectangular table with a glass top and chrome legs.

In a living room combined with a dining area, furniture made of the same material can be placed: for example, a shelf and coffee table. Many furniture manufacturers produce series of matching pieces suitable for different interior zones.
