Do you remember in the early post-Soviet years, it was popular to replace interior doors with curtains made from cassette tapes?

Now it is trendy to close door openings with such curtains too. Only now made more skillfully, with an Eastern touch. Such curtains can be seen in cartoons about Scheherazade. They are called thread curtains. These curtains were invented a very, very long time ago, but they have not lost their popularity even to this day.

Variety of Thread Curtains

What are thread curtains? These are curtains made of many threads that are interwoven in a special way.

Such draperies can easily decorate windows and doors, hide and decorate a niche in the room, and easily handle the task of space zoning without taking up too much space.

The choice of thread curtains is wide and diverse. They can be made from threads or ribbons, tape or cord, adorned with buttons, sequins, beads, beads, decorative elements made of polymer clay, etc.

Thread Curtains Made by Hand

Today we will make such curtains by hand. They will decorate your windows and doorways in the apartment or on the dacha. For this, you will need:

  • thick cord (atlas ribbon or strong nylon thread will do);
  • beads or buttons (identical or different in color and size, all depends on your imagination);
  • a track with brackets or a thin rail, or thick fabric rail (this will be used to mount the curtains).

Preparation Stage

First, decide on the length of your curtains – then cut the cord pieces to the desired length. The density of the curtains you want to get depends on how many threads you need. For this, measure the width of the opening that will decorate your rope curtains and calculate at what distance the threads will be from each other.

Attaching Beads to Threads

Now you can start attaching the decorations. If your curtains are made of beads – secure them with knots so they don't slip off. Keep in mind that in this case you need to cut the cord with a surplus so that it doesn't end up shorter due to knots. If you're making curtains from buttons – pass the thread through each button twice.

Attaching to the Base

When all threads with beads or buttons are ready, you can start attaching them to the base. If you're using a rail as the base – nail small nails to it and tie the threads to them. If you're using a track – attach the threads to hooks. And if you're using a ribbon as the base – sew the threads to it.

And there you have it – original curtains. On sunny days they will bring you joy, and in the evening — a romantic atmosphere.
