Autumn lawn care

With the arrival of autumn, lawns require special attention. Autumn lawn care includes mowing, dethatching, soil top-dressing, fertilizing with mineral fertilizers, and edge leveling. However, autumn lawn care has its own unique aspects.

All autumn lawn care procedures are designed to maintain soil aeration and water permeability, improve root nutrition, and prevent the spread of fungal infections.

Lawn fertilization

Lawns composed of perennial grasses require consistent care and attention. During summer, fertilization is carried out using balanced fertilizers in a nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium ratio of 3:2:1. For every 100 square meters, half a kilogram of active nitrogen is recommended.

Proper nitrogen balance is essential for a high-quality green cover. Excess nitrogen may harm root systems, making winter survival more difficult. Therefore, in the final month of summer, the nutrient ratio shifts to 1:1:1 (nitrogen:phosphorus:potassium).

After a pause in mid-September, fertilization is performed with high potassium content. This promotes the formation of water compounds that do not create ice crystals during freezing, thus preventing cell membrane rupture in plants.

In October, lawns should be fertilized exclusively with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. These formulations strengthen plant cell tissues and stimulate root development.

When selecting autumn lawn fertilizer, avoid nitrogen-based compounds that stimulate grass growth, as lawns need rest and structural reinforcement during this season.

Lime application to lawns

Many issues with lawn appearance are mistakenly attributed to high soil acidity. Lawn grass thrives best on slightly acidic soils, not alkaline ones.

Soil pH should be tested every two to three years. If acidity increases—often due to mineral fertilizer use—lime should be applied in autumn. Apply 100 to 200 grams of lime per square meter.

Final autumn mowing

Mow lawns during active grass growth—up to October–November. Mowing height should be 1–2 cm higher than in summer. If grass is below 6 cm, it may freeze in harsh winters. If it exceeds 10 cm, it may rot under snow and ice.

In September, use vertical mowing. Special tools cut through the turf, promoting rapid recovery of severed rhizomes and new root formation. This method effectively removes thatch and significantly improves turf quality.

Soil aeration

Besides standard maintenance, monitor lawn quality after summer use. Signs of deterioration in autumn may include dead patches, wilting, trampling, or moss growth.

Reduce watering in autumn. Excess moisture may damage roots, compact soil, and promote disease. In such cases, aerate compacted areas—especially where water pools after autumn rains—remove fallen leaves and thatch, and reseed bare patches.

Remember: disease, moss, and heavy weed infestation indicate improper autumn care. To ensure a lush, silky lawn in spring, give it proper attention and care during autumn.
