Boat House on a Lake in Canada
Boat House on a Lake in Canada
Building Arts Architects studio created a glass boat house on Kawagama Lake in the province of Ontario, Canada. There is no bathroom or shower in the house because local legislation did not allow for a water supply system to be installed so close to the lake, but there is an open tap mounted on a granite slab next to the entrance. The main cottage is located about 90 meters from a modern ell built from prefabricated elements.
A pedestrian bridge leads to the upper glazed level of the boat house, which is located on a hilly, forested plot.
Steel supports and Douglas fir wood were chosen as the primary construction materials not only for their aesthetics but also for their durability and performance characteristics in conditions of sharp climate changes in the region.
The lower floor of the ell is clad with wood siding that was preserved from the previous structure that had failed. Architects reused as much timber as possible due to difficulties with transporting materials to and from the site.
The front door made of oak and glass provides access to the upper floor, while external stairs lead down to a closed storage for boats, canoes, and kayaks. A terrace with an open fireplace and dock are also located on the lower floor.
On top, an open space of 42 square meters is almost entirely decorated with floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows offering a beautiful view of Kawagama Lake. A wood-burning fireplace and four chairs arranged around a stylish wooden table are provided in the living area. Two double beds with bright red blankets are situated behind two functional partitions. Floors are tiled with dark gray natural stone.
