House Near the Great Wall of China
House Near the Great Wall of China
Architects MDDM STUDIO designed a private house in the mountainous terrain near the Great Wall of China, north of Beijing, China. The 300 square meter residence stands on the site of a fruit tree storage built in the middle of the last century, constructed from natural stone. The client's house, located on the southern side of the plot, rises above the roof of the former underground storage, which was converted into additional living space with four bedrooms.
The original stone walls are fully exposed, complemented by polished concrete construction and pristine white plaster internal partitions. On the northern side only, a massive facade was replaced with panoramic glazing to create a terrace along the living room and dining area. Next to it, architects added a wooden garage box.
The old roof was replaced with two concrete slabs, separated from the stone wall and installed at different heights. This allows natural light to enter the house at various angles, enhancing natural ventilation. The view from the existing house's terrace is enriched by two green roofs that harmoniously blend with the panoramic view of the Great Wall.
A corridor connecting the new house to the existing building was designed in the southeast corner, near the bedrooms. Since both plots are separated by a road, the corridor is a tunnel passing under that road.
