Mansion in Melbourne's Suburbs
Architectural studio Edition Office designed a modern mansion with an area of 680 square meters in Melbourne's suburbs, Australia. Starting work on the project, architects transformed the land plot into a large terrace with a garden, becoming the backdrop for everyday life. The house stands surrounded by plants visible from every room. The building itself is a textured concrete shell over two glass structures of different sizes.
The architects' goal was to create a strong sense of sanctuary, the feeling of being away from the problems of daily work life. The project turned out to be balanced, without compromising openness, and the connection between the house and the all-encompassing garden terrace was light and captivating. The explicit restraint in material palette and detailing is inherent to the project and is its advantage, not overwhelming the quality characteristics of the object.
The project uses principles of passive solar design. Glass walls are separated from the outer concrete shell, allowing winter sunlight to enter every room and protecting against strong thermal load in summer. The architects also provided water-heated floors, cross-ventilation, solar pool heating system, and photovoltaic power supply system.
