A family house in the Australian suburb of Redland Bay, designed by Base Architecture, was immediately focused on a clean and simple design solution to emphasize the integration of the building into its surrounding landscape. The architects aimed to make the dwelling bright and open, with large rooms that naturally flow into one another, as well as offering picturesque views to the outside.
Located on top of a hill exposed to constant strong winds, the L-shaped building structure sits. The area of the living zone is distributed towards the end of each wing of the building, offering scenic views to the observer, while the bedrooms border one another, enclosing the inner courtyard to the north.
The ridges of walls made from monolithic sandstone rise up from the ground toward the overhanging concrete roof slabs. The concrete blocks are separated from the floor made of Carrara marble by panoramic glazing with wooden frames, creating minimal separation between interior and exterior space. The choice of materials is simple and consistent both inside and outside. The only variation is the sleeping area, where a change in color palette, materials, and design hints at a shift in privacy levels.
The building has always been considered a family home for long-term residence, which prompted thoughtful planning. For a family with young children, all bedrooms are on the same level. As the children grow up, parents can retreat to the upper floor, leaving the guest bedroom behind. The noisy children's zone will soon become a space for home schooling. For active participation in the rapidly developing business, the building features a functional home office located behind a heavy stone-tiled door to avoid creating contradiction with the harmonious family atmosphere.
