Three-Story House in Taipei
Three-Story House in Taipei
House W located in the central residential district of Taipei, Taiwan, designed by KC Design Studio — an example of successful renovation of old housing to meet modern demands for comfort and convenience.
Architects moved the front facade of the building back, enclosing it with white metal mesh to create enclosed balconies on each floor. This not only forms several semi-open spaces but also improves natural lighting and ventilation of the house. Additionally, some ceilings were partially removed — not only on the upper level but also on the lower levels — creating a continuous flow of light flooding the house from the roof to the first floor.
The rear part of the house was pushed back half a meter inward to increase the distance from the neighboring building. This seemingly minor change had a significant impact on improving lighting and ventilation of the structure.
The interior was also meticulously planned. Light wooden flooring is used throughout the home, except for the balconies which feature warm brown wood. The color palette is based on white and grey tones — from dark gray sofa in the living room to white and grey kitchen chairs, dark gray tiled floor with a Christmas tree pattern in the bathroom — and accentuated with wooden and stainless steel furniture in the kitchen and staircase area. Glass is another texture that characterizes the interior of the house. Transparent partitions separate rooms from one another while maintaining an open layout and preserving the original room configuration.
