Studio Raúl Sánchez Architects completely transformed two separate apartments, located one above the other in an old building standing in the heart of the Raval district in Barcelona, Spain, creating a two-level residence with an unusual layout.
In one of these volumes, a spiral staircase is placed, in another — a toilet and office on the first floor level, and a bedroom on the second.
Two simple ideal forms were integrated into the existing irregular space of the old house, organizing the surrounding environment and eliminating the need for additional partitions and structural elements.
A clear and expressive color palette helps articulate the space. On the exterior, the volumes are painted yellow with gold powder and coated with lacquer, clearly standing out against white walls. Their interior is painted black, marking the bedroom's night zone as well as hidden areas of the toilet and 'secret' staircase.
