The Amstelloft project, developed in Amsterdam (Netherlands) by WE architecten studio, was inspired by living spaces created in old schools, churches, and warehouses—spacious and flexible environments capable of accommodating a wide range of uses, from artists' workshops to family apartments.
Future residents were deeply involved in designing their own apartments, leading to a wide variety of architectural solutions and design approaches. Architects organized numerous information sessions during which residents could outline their wishes and requirements for their living space.
Concrete structural elements divide the building into vertical blocks that are 5.5 meters high. Inside this space, homeowners had the freedom to shape and define its layout and content as they wished. Over time, internal structures can be modified and adapted to changing needs of the inhabitants: a youthful loft may become a four-bedroom family apartment or vacation apartments and vice versa.
Large arched windows enhance the sense of spaciousness in high double rooms and give the façade a cohesive and unified appearance. Thanks to these windows, apartments are well-lit and filled with air.
