Before and After: Budget Renovation of a Small 32 m² Apartment
With simple solutions, we transformed the 'worn-out' featureless space into a cozy and comfortable one
This apartment is located in the resort city of Gelendzhik on the Black Sea coast. Julia Sofronova's family bought it for temporary residence with plans to move there permanently later. Julia is a lawyer who graduated from home staging courses a year ago and now helps prepare apartments for daily rent in Gelendzhik. Limited time and budget didn't allow for a full renovation, so Julia applied her knowledge to arrange the apartment herself.
Location: Gelendzhik
Area: 32 m²
Ceiling height: 2.7 m
Rooms: 1
Bathroom: 1
Design: Julia Sofronova
Apartment Before RenovationThe apartment is in a building from 2018. Before the renovation, the walls featured outdated wallpapers with a large floral pattern that created visual chaos and over-saturation. Dark interior doors intensified the feeling of confinement. The outdated furniture, which had lost its original appeal, deprived the apartment of comfort and coziness and needed updating. The interior needed to be transformed into a brighter, more welcoming space.
Kitchen After RenovationThe wallpapers and doors were painted in light tones, visually expanding the space and making it brighter and airier. Accent green touches added liveliness and created an atmosphere of harmony and comfort. The laminate left over from the previous renovation complemented the updated interior, creating a sense of stylistic unity and comfort.

The kitchen cabinet was chosen in a light color, visually expanding the space. Upper cabinets were omitted to create an impression of spaciousness and save space. The kitchen has all necessary appliances: a standalone refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave oven, and cooktop. Cooking appliances are hidden to avoid cluttering the interior since there is a separate sleeping area on the kitchen - a pull-out sofa bed, making the space functional and convenient.

The balcony was refreshed with new paint, giving it a fresh and modern look. A storage cabinet was added for convenience to neatly store necessary items. Additionally, chairs for relaxation were placed — creating a cozy spot where one can enjoy morning coffee and a stunning sea view.

Room After RenovationIn the room, a double bed and a yellow pull-out sofa were placed, adding energy and comfort. A wardrobe and a chest of drawers provide enough storage for three people's belongings, which is perfect for seasonal residence. To create a cozy atmosphere, bright textiles and various pleasant details like baskets and decorations associated with relaxation and nature were selected, enhancing the atmosphere of comfort and harmony.

Due to the house's location surrounded by greenery, I chose colors that reflect nature's beauty and create a cozy and harmonious atmosphere, conveying the sunny mood of Gelendzhik.
Entry HallThe entry hall became very bright and cozy. A spacious wardrobe-closet is provided for storing clothes, along with a compact shoe rack to maintain order. A pouf was added for convenience, serving as a functional element. The entrance door is complemented with a mirror that not only visually expands the space but also adds practicality, allowing one to quickly check their appearance before leaving.

BathroomThe sink and toilet were replaced. Accent black faucets add a modern style touch and contrast to the room's overall palette. A green pleated screen installed under the bathtub not only conceals utilities but also refreshes the interior. The new mirror above the sink visually expands space and creates a feeling of light, while a woven basket for laundry brings an element of nature and comfort.
