5 mistakes when choosing curtains that can ruin your entire interior
We explain the difficulties you might encounter when choosing and ordering curtains. And how to avoid them
Choosing curtains is an important step in interior design. They affect not only aesthetics but also the functionality of the room: they regulate light, provide privacy, and complement style. We've collected common mistakes people make when ordering curtains and explain how to avoid them.
Too narrow curtains
What's wrong:
Many calculate the width of curtains based on window or wall size — for example, 200 cm. But they forget to account for gathering: draping "eats" part of the fabric. As a result, there's a gap in the center of the window through which light leaks.
How to do it right:

The width of curtains should be determined based on the length of the rod, including the gathering factor. Depending on the mounting type (eyelets, hooks, rings), this coefficient can vary from 1.5 to 2.5. If you sew them yourself, add 10 cm on each side for hems.

What's wrong:
When the curtain covers the entire wall, it blends with the space and makes the interior feel heavier. Especially when closed — such a 'canvas' without visual boundaries looks bulky.
How to do it right:
Use fabric slightly wider than the window opening — this is enough for draping. Panoramic windows are an exception, where wide curtains are appropriate. In other cases, it's better to leave part of the wall open, especially if it is beautifully decorated.

What's wrong:
Often the length is calculated 'to fit' under the windowsill, forgetting about the height of the rod or how the fabric will lie. Or, on the contrary, an excessive amount is added, and the curtains pile up on the floor, collecting dust and lint.

How to do it right:
Up to the windowsill: curtains end 1 cm above its edge.
Below the windowsill: ideally 10–15 cm below.
To the floor: hem 1 cm above the floor — this is convenient and practical.
With a flowing fabric — looks beautiful but not always comfortable for daily use.
Tip: measure the length from the rod to your desired point and consider the mounting type — it also affects how the fabric sits.
