Before and After: How the Bathroom Was Transformed from a Miserable State
The designer completely renovated a ruined bathroom in a Stalin-era apartment
For a young family working in the computer games industry, preserving the historical atmosphere of the apartment in a Stalin-era building was important, but at the same time making the space functional and stylish. The bathroom before renovation was in a terrible state—old utilities, peeling paint, lack of storage space, and absence of modern comfort. However, designer Lena Kharlova managed to turn it into a functional and visually striking space while preserving the spirit of the past.
Photo before renovationThe walls of the bathroom are clad with square white tiles with black grout—this is not only a reference to Soviet bathrooms but also a popular design solution in modern interior design. The contrast between the light tiles and dark grout makes the space more dynamic. The bright Spanish tiles with a geometric pattern on the floor add an element of modernity and draw attention to the stylish solution.

Green walls painted in a trendy shade blend perfectly into the retro style of Stalin-era apartments, adding freshness and liveliness to the interior. For the shower area, Lena used glass blocks—an element typical of Soviet design that is regaining popularity. The shower became stylish and functional: shelves for cosmetics made from wood were neatly placed in the tile niche, adding warmth and coziness.

Bathroom furniture from IKEA. In the corner next to the shower, a spacious cabinet with semi-circular handles was installed where all necessary accessories can be stored. Stylish black accents—towel radiator, mixers, and shower—create contrast with the white tiles.
An interesting detail was an oval mirror with a gold frame, next to which two elegant lights were installed. These elements add a touch of luxury to the interior, creating an atmosphere close to classic style but not overloaded with details.

Functionality is thought out to the smallest detail: the washing machine and dryer are installed in a column on a small platform, saving space and making the use of appliances convenient. A wall-mounted toilet with an installation symbolizes minimalism and a modern approach to interior organization.
Every detail in this project emphasizes the harmonious blend of history and modernity, showing how even the most ruined bathroom can be transformed into a stylish and cozy space.
