Spoiler: you can create a stylish space not only on a glazed balcony

Many people are used to storing unnecessary items on balconies, which take up a lot of space in the apartment. And this is a big missed opportunity, because on the balcony you can design an incredible relaxation area or even a small office. Then you will get a place where you'll want to spend hours, watching sunsets and sunrises or just relaxing after a stressful day. We've collected great ideas from projects you can be inspired by.

Dining Room and Office

This apartment was designed by designer Natalia Khiylova for the client's mother, who often takes care of her grandchildren. Based on her wishes: to provide a workspace where the children can do their homework, a place for storing toys, and also a resting and guest sleeping area. On 40 square meters it was possible to fit everything and even more, with the balcony combining several functions.

An insulated balcony is located in the kitchen: it can be used as a dining room and office. Due to sliding doors, the boundaries between spaces are blurred: visually the balcony becomes an extension of the kitchen. There is a comfortable table, spacious drawers matching the kitchen cabinet design, and shelves where you can place decor or items needed for work.

A Stunning Balcony for the Whole Family

Designer Victoria Vishnevskaya planned this apartment for herself, her husband and their beloved pet. The renovation lasted five years: during that time a studio was transformed into a two-bedroom flat with a kitchen, living room, isolated bedroom and an incredible balcony.

What makes it special? On the insulated balcony there is a relaxation area used by all family members: here the dog sleeps, the child plays, and adults can relax after work. It's no wonder that the balcony is popular: the incredible wall design you want to look at for hours, and a comfortable sofa perfectly fits into the space without overloading it. Another great idea is the column finishing, where bricks seem to break through under a layer of paint.

Simple and Elegant

Designer Daria Ermak decorated a one-room apartment for a young designer. Bright tones were used in the finish — cheerful green in the hallway and living room, yellow in the bathroom. The decor was balanced with orange cushions and unusual light fixtures. The balcony became especially atmospheric.

It turns out that to create a cozy atmosphere it's enough with just three items: a rattan chair, a minimalist table and hanging shelves of unusual shape. Freshness to the balcony brings wood standing next to the table, while candles are placed on the shelves.

Smart Material Choice

The apartment owners are a young couple with two small children who dreamed of a spacious and comfortable flat in a light palette. Designer Evgenia Demidova brought this dream to life: they abandoned the large re-planning and removed the partition between the kitchen and living room.

The balcony next to the bedroom was equipped as an office: it was insulated, glazed and a warm floor was planned. For the finish, decorative cork wall panels were used which proved to be an excellent material for sound and thermal insulation. Working on such a balcony was pure pleasure, and thanks to the light tone, enough daylight enters the bedroom.

Real Jungles

Designer Dina Udaltsova turned the apartment with a trapezoidal shape into ergonomic and stylish housing. The kitchen was moved to make it passable, the balcony was insulated and a workspace was created right on the windowsill. The interior in a gray-pink color scheme looks bright but not excessive.

The main detail of the balcony is an accent wall with elements of rusted pipes and stabilized moss. It seems like nature is breaking through directly through concrete jungles before our eyes. Here also sits a small convenient table, chair and green plants.

Cozy Open Balcony

Olga Minullina designed a modern space for herself and her family from a typical Stalin-era apartment with a small kitchen and separate bathrooms. Decor helped to combine the old and new into one harmonious concept.

Often examples are shown with glazed balconies, but in this case you can confidently be inspired by the relaxation area that resembles a small Parisian balcony. And for such beauty it's enough with just several planters, a set of folding chairs and a table.
