How an Ordinary Family Did Living Room Renovation on Their Own
They painted, whitewashed, changed the upholstery, facades, and countertop themselves
Today, Svetlana Ivanichenko invited us for a visit. Together with her husband, they moved into a two-room apartment in a five-story building. The area of their flat in a Khrushchyovka is 46 square meters. Let's see how they managed to beautify their living room with minimal costs.
Learning New ProfessionsThey did not hire a designer before starting the renovation. Professional services are expensive. You can save a considerable amount by decorating the interior on your own. The husband of Svetlana took charge, and he did a pretty good job.
Good Deeds Don't SeekNo major re-planning was done; only minor changes were made to the existing look of the apartment. In particular, in the living room, on a gypsum board structure separating the relaxation area from the study, they replaced lighting and installed a wooden countertop.

They did not change the parquet that came from previous owners. It looks nice, and there is no flaw to be found. They also left the bathroom and balcony as they were.
Golden Hands of the OwnersSince a significant part of the renovation — at least 30% of all works — was done by the owners themselves, they managed to save some family money on this article of expenses. In particular, Svetlana and her husband painted the shelves in the living room. In the hallway, they did most of the work themselves.
Beauty in SimplicityAll the renovation involved leveling walls and ceilings, and painting them. They chose quality materials at corresponding prices. But they reduced renovation costs by avoiding decor in living spaces.

However, minimalism does not look ascetic because the owners picked a successful color palette and added atmospheric personal items to decorate the interior.
Presence of OwnersThe apartment feels like the soul of its owners, their interests and preferences. The atmosphere of presence is expressed in small decor details created by the hands of the owners or their friends, such as paintings in the living room, an original doll on the kitchen counter, curtains and cushions in the living room.
From Around the WorldThe owners love traveling, and they bring back favorite items from their trips that blend harmoniously into the look of the apartment: a lamp in the bedroom, a mirror in the bathroom, various cabinet handles.

This is the interesting apartment of Svetlana's family. The owners managed to add personal touches to the strict lines of the interior design, bring in their own interests and hobbies. The result is a cozy space where every detail has been carefully planned even on a small area.
