Swedish Life Hacks for Furnishing a Small Apartment
We share how designers at Nooks managed to create such a cozy space for living
Even if your apartment has limited square footage, you can fit everything you need and still leave plenty of open space. A great example is this compact 29-square-meter flat in Sweden.
- Monochromatic Flooring
What They Did: to visually connect all rooms and make them appear larger, they laid wooden flooring in a calm tone throughout the space.
Alternative: diagonally laid flooring or painting floors in a single color matching the walls can also visually increase square footage.

- Vibrant Walls
What They Did: decorators decided to experiment and painted the walls pink. Some white accents on the ceiling are visible in certain spots — this defines the wall zone and makes the room feel taller.
Alternative: walls can be painted in light or beige tones, and one of them can be painted in a bright color to create contrast.

- Wall Cabinets in Harmony with Walls
What They Did: due to the small size of the space, they opted for standard tall cabinets painted in wall color. This way, storage systems blend seamlessly into the interior.
Alternative: cabinet doors can be covered with leftover wallpaper or the cabinets themselves can be hidden in niches or behind curtains.

- Kitchen Cabinets
What They Did: the same approach was applied on the kitchen side — now matte white cabinet fronts match the walls.
Alternative: if there are few items in the kitchen, upper cabinets aren't always necessary. In extreme cases, they can be replaced with open shelves to add airiness to the space.

- Curtailed Doors
What They Did: to avoid overloading the already cramped living space, they chose not to install doors. Instead, thick curtains of matching wall color were hung at the entrance to the bedroom — they are fixed according to the owner's preference.
Alternative: a sliding door could also work (usually not too eye-catching).

- Additional Storage Solutions
What They Did: in a niche located at the far corner of the bedroom, they installed open shelves. At the entrance, shelves and a small wardrobe were also added to the height of the room.
Alternative: some items can be stored under the bed — as long as they are easily accessible.
