6 invaluable tips for renovation based on real examples
How to choose wall color, hide gas pipes, and why you should pay attention to window hardware
We share secrets that will help you make your home comfortable, beautiful, and safe. Our heroes have already used these life hacks: see what came out of it.
- Make paint samples
Alida and Boris recommend making paint samples in different shades before finalizing the wall color choice. The color chosen in the design project may differ significantly in reality. Natural and artificial lighting, reflections, wall texture, area of painting, and many other factors affect color perception.
- Plan window hardware
Take your time choosing window hardware, especially if you have small children in the house. For example, Sasha Nechuynev chose non-standard hardware for his windows. To open the window to the sash, you need to turn the handle to a horizontal position. Thus, the window opens vertically, and the child won't be able to open it further. The advantage of this hardware is that you don’t have to rotate the entire mechanism when opening the window, it doesn't wear out and lasts longer.
- Align door heights
A useful tip from designer Julia Zhirnova on how to beautifully mask doors of different heights in an interior. In one of her projects, the height difference reached 20 cm. The designer decided to frame the entrance door to visually increase its height.
- Remove wallpaper easily and quickly
Katya Vokina did the renovation herself. The apartment had old wallpaper that needed to be carefully removed. For this purpose, she used a sprayer with soapy water. She moistened the walls with it and removed the wallpaper with a spatula.
- Decorate the interior with benefit
Head of Loft & Home design studio Ilya Komolov maximally used decorative beams in the interior of a suburban townhouse. Electricity wiring runs inside these beams with easy access, and the ventilation system also goes throughout the house.

- Move the gas stove correctly
As a result of kitchen reconfiguration, designer Ludmila Danilovich made a door opening in place of the gas stove. The gas riser had to be rerouted, as it cannot be hidden, and the keys must not be concealed in a cabinet. Ludmila decorated access to the riser in the floor with a baseboard protrusion on self-tapping screws.
