Redesigning a Small Stalin-era Apartment: How It Was Done
Low ceilings, small rooms, and lack of air — this is how the apartment could be described before the redesign. Take a look at how the designer managed to fix the situation
We have already talked about the interior of this apartment in the project designed by Irina Krivtsova. Today, we will go into more detail about the redesign. An inconvenient space was transformed into a bright studio with a bedroom, office, and living room all in one room.
What do we know about this apartment? Type of building Stalin-era apartment Area 32 sq. m Rooms 1
Created a kitchen entrance from the room
To visually expand the small space. Indeed, it was not possible to fully merge the room with the kitchen due to gas. Therefore, sliding doors were provided between the room and kitchen. The visual connection of all rooms was achieved through finishing: light walls + colored trim.
Removed the partition between the room and hallway
This also helped expand the space (considering that the hallway was initially narrow and dark). Now, sufficient natural light enters from the room. Privacy was also taken into account: part of the wall separates the relaxation area from the entrance hall.
Combined the bathroom, shower, and storage
Originally, the layout featured a tiny bathroom, a similarly small toilet, and a storage room where nothing would fit. The designer suggested combining these three spaces into one and providing enough storage space for household chemicals and personal hygiene items.
