In typical apartments, the standard ceiling height is 2.5 meters. Let's look at design techniques that help visually stretch the room and add more air.

Designers often encounter low ceilings in apartments. Solving this problem is not complicated: we share the most effective techniques.

Paint it in the same color as the walls

Ekateryna Logvinova used this technique when decorating a studio apartment. The space became airy, and the ceilings seemed weightless.

Choose a wide baseboard

A wide baseboard in a small apartment helps 'scale down' the space: visually, the room appears larger and ceilings higher. See how this technique was used by designers from Studio '20:18'.

Camouflage the baseboard and cornice

The wide baseboard and ceiling cornice in this house are painted the same color as the walls. This is a favorite technique of designer Elena Skutova for visually increasing ceiling height.

Leave a light band near the ceiling

Designer Olga Chernenko did not paint the walls all the way to the ceiling, but left a ten-centimeter white stripe. A great alternative to a ceiling cornice.

Paint in black

In small spaces like hallways, black graphite paint and mirrored walls can help 'dissolve' the ceiling into space, as in the project by Mikhail Novinsky's studio.

Add vertical elements to the interior

You can use wallpaper in vertical stripes, hang posters of vertical formats, or use moldings. Alternatively, install a grid partition, as in Anna Shvetz's project.

Redirect attention to the floor

For this purpose, Anna Erman chose a larger-than-usual parquet pattern on the floor: it diverts attention from the small room area, making the ceiling appear higher.

Use lighting

You can install perimeter ceiling lighting so that the ceiling literally floats in space. But it's even simpler to add light fixtures with long suspensions, as in the project by Bureau 'General Area'.
