10 Terrifying Buildings That Instill Fear

They are the subject of legends and chilling stories. Who knows, perhaps these rumors are actually true?

Last year we shared with you a collection of abandoned houses that give chills down your spine. But there are still so many amazing mystical places in the world that we wanted to tell you about! That's why for Halloween we prepared a new collection of mysterious abandoned buildings.

Russia

A mystical sphere the size of a five-story building is located in Tver Oblast, near Dubna. According to the official version, this unusual object was being transported by airplane in the 1980s, but the sphere slipped from its cables and fell into the forest. The exact purpose of this structure is unknown, which is not surprising as legends began to spread about the sphere. The most popular legend, of course, is that the sphere has extraterrestrial origins.

Located in the Caspian Sea stands a majestic abandoned complex — the eighth workshop of the "Dagdiesel" factory. Originally built in 1939 for testing naval weapons, the workshop was decommissioned from the factory's balance in 1966. Now it stands in open sea, resembling an ancient monster.

Norway

The psychiatric clinic "Lier Sikehus" has a dark past that matches the classic tropes of horror films: experiments were once conducted on patients here. For unknown reasons, four hospital blocks were abandoned, while the remaining parts of the building continue to function today.

United States

Nestled on Lake Seneca in New York state is a creepy abandoned cottage. Notable for this place is the nearby cemetery of equally dark old cars.

The castle on Pollepel Island once served as a warehouse where wealthy trader Frank Bannerman stored his weapons. However, due to a fire in 1969, the building suffered significant damage, and the state government decided not to spend money on its restoration.

North Korea

The "Rugen" hotel in Pyongyang was prophesied to have a grand future if it could be completed on time. According to the 1987 plan, the building was intended to become the world's tallest hotel at 330 meters high. Construction lasted more than 20 years, after which it was decided to put at least part of it into operation. However, this has not happened yet.

In the city of Montso stands a magnificent structure — a cooling tower for water at an electric power station. The tower has not been in operation since 2007, and during that time its interior has grown over with moss and ferns, giving the tower a unique mysterious appearance.

United Kingdom

The "Mansella" forts, resembling elephants from Dalí's painting, were built during World War II. These structures protected the United Kingdom from German troops.

Colombia

Finally, a chilling story about a haunted abandoned hotel named "Salto." The hotel is located opposite the picturesque waterfall called Tekwindam, which translates to "open door." Indigenous people believe that this place is a conduit to the spiritual world. Several years after its opening, the hotel had to close due to increasing cases of visitor suicides. Over time, the building became covered with ominous legends about ghosts who permanently reside in the hotel.
