How Interior Designers Use IKEA Furniture in Interiors

We've gathered several design projects in one collection where almost all furniture and decor were purchased from the Swedish furniture giant

It's possible to furnish an apartment stylishly and comfortably without choosing interior items from countless design catalogs. One advantage of IKEA is that you can find almost anything in the stores: from a cable organizer to a full kitchen cabinet with built-in appliances. Russian designers often use this brand, especially when the project budget is limited.

2-Room Apartment with a Mix of Soviet and IKEA Furniture

Designer Maria Mikene successfully preserved the Scandinavian spirit in the interior, leaving the grandmother's 'legacy' items in the client's flat. "I wanted to create a trendy and vibrant interior and incorporate some of the beloved grandmother's furniture," explains the designer. "The mid-century style worked perfectly, as Soviet furniture is essentially part of that era."

The living room has a great combination of a polished cabinet section, vintage buffet, and modern IKEA sofa. The bedroom features a bed and wardrobe from the Swedish brand.

Nordic 2-Room Apartment in St. Petersburg

The clients asked designer Natalia Khudaya to create a subtle and calm interior. A neutral color palette was chosen: gray concrete and accent walls in the color of the northern sea.

Most of the furniture was found at IKEA: kitchen cabinet, shelves, sideboards, textiles. The choice was made in advance and taken into account during the design process. For example, the wardrobe in the bedroom was built with the dimensions of the PAX storage system in mind.

Comfortable Interior with a Modern Blue Color

The client of this project is a student who received the 2-room apartment without finishing. The budget was severely limited, so it was necessary to avoid re-planning and find ways to save money. They decided to create a vibrant interior in the color-block technique and furnish it with affordable items.

"The project predominantly features minimalist IKEA furniture: recognizable wardrobes and walk-in closets, sofa, desks, lighting, and decor. What's its advantage? Not only in price but also in how well the items complement each other," comments designer Ekaterina Savenko from "Interior Architecture" studio.

Cozy Apartment in Veliky Novgorod

This project was designed by Irina Petrova and Olga Vasileva under the constraints of a limited budget: 1.5 million rubles for renovating a 60 sq.m. 2-room flat. The client bought the apartment for herself and her young daughter, so the interior had to be as warm and cozy as possible, not cold and minimalist. The designers focused on affordable finishing, accent textiles, and IKEA furniture.

For the kitchen, they selected a cabinet with white fronts. The hallway was fitted with a coat rack and sideboard. A desk found its place in the bedroom. All listed furniture was from IKEA. The result is bright, cozy, comfortable, and relatively budget-friendly.

Bright Studio in Kotelniki

Small studio was zoned using wooden panel partitions made from timber. This allowed for eliminating the feeling of overly open space and making it more intimate, while still keeping the interior airy.

Only a few items in this apartment were custom-made according to designer sketches. Most furniture was purchased at IKEA. "It's convenient that you can make a list and buy everything at once. Also, the items complement each other well; for example, a white dining table and black wooden chairs look stylish and harmonious," the designers from "Forma Domа" studio explain.

Small 2-Room Apartment in Almaty

The owners of this apartment are big fans of the Swedish brand, so even the taps were ordered from IKEA. However, it was necessary to ship all the purchased furniture from Russia to Kazakhstan. In such a small space, two bedrooms and a common area where the whole family could gather were needed.

"We found a solution thanks to the balcony, which was insulated and connected to the kitchen after legally re-planning," the designers from "Malitsky Studio" explain. "This allowed placing a spacious cabinet and setting up an eating area with a sofa. Here the family can gather for dinner and spend evenings together."
