Decorating Walls with the IKEA Planner: 4 Pro Ideas
We tested the new online service from the Swedish brand and created several great compositions — sharing them with you!
IKEA has released an online planner for wall decoration. What does it look like? Let's find out — our expert will help.
Anastasia Filimonova — ARTIST-DECORATOR. Creates interior abstractions and advises on decor selection. She believes that art should be present in every home.
From working with clients, I know that many find it hard to assemble a composition of paintings and wall decor.
What causes questions:
- proportion matching of the wall, paintings, and furniture;
- format selection, which can be combined with one another;
- decision-making on which images work well together.
The online IKEA planner can help find answers.
You can download the planner on a tablet or laptop. The app interface is clean and intuitive. You choose any wall color and place furniture (sofa, bed, dresser, etc.) or leave the wall empty. By the way, furniture dimensions can be adjusted — this helps maintain proportions.
Choose from the menu wall objects: paintings, clocks, mirrors, shelves, boards… Before placing them, remember to click the "ruler" button so sizes appear. This is convenient — you can set the wall, furniture, and painting dimensions right away, so you can account for spacing between items. This way, you’ll instantly see the full composition and total cost of selected items.
Below I’ve collected several compositions from frames and paintings — perhaps they’ll inspire you!
Horizontal HangingUsing different frame formats: vertical, horizontal, square. With three different formats, we create a stretched horizontal composition.
If placing paintings above a sofa, consider the distance between it and the paintings — so that sitting people don’t bump their heads on them. Frames can be completely different, which makes it more interesting.
Using ShelvesPaintings can be hung or placed on shelves.
Here I chose paintings from the GRONBIL series (nine pieces in total), added a painting by FRIEDENAE, and a square frame by RIBBA. An interesting result is achieved if shelves are placed at different levels and paintings vary in height.
Three FormatsDon’t be afraid to use different formats for future paintings, various types of frames (thin, thick, relief) and matting. This way, you’ll create an accent wall worth looking at.
Playing with Formats and ColorsThanks to the variety of frame and decor formats, you can mix differently colored frames and mirrors. IKEA offers many colorful frames: blue, yellow, gold, green, black... Experiment!

In short, thanks to IKEA’s handy planner, it's easy to thoughtfully arrange paintings and decor!
Personally, I especially liked the option to save all dimensions, selected frames, cost, and visualization.
