Beautiful Artist's Apartment in Stockholm
This is what a perfect Scandinavian interior should look like
In this wonderful Scandinavian apartment lives artist-illustrator Emilia Ilke with her husband and son. They moved to Stockholm just three years ago; previously, the family lived in the suburbs.
When I first saw this apartment, I was breathless — I had never seen so much light. It poured through large floor-to-ceiling windows and filled every corner of the space. That’s exactly why we decided to leave our old house and finally move.

Extensive work was done — Emilia and Fredrik performed a full renovation with a new layout. The kitchen was merged with the living room, creating a spacious and bright area for relaxation and creativity. They also decorated a small bedroom and a child’s room for their son Igor.

They decided to replace the old floors in all rooms — part of them had been damaged due to a kitchen flood years ago. They chose light-colored wood flooring with warm tones — walking on such floors is pleasant for both adults and children.

The color palette wasn’t chosen immediately. At that time, it was trendy to paint the walls gray, but Emilia rejected this idea — she wanted the space to remain bright and airy.
In the end, the couple chose a light blue shade — in daylight it appears almost white and yet not too cold.
We were so exhausted from the reconfiguration and floor replacement that we simply picked a favorite tone and used it throughout all rooms. And that was an excellent decision!

They matched the furniture and decor to the wall color — it was important for them that all tones harmonize. Emilia’s artwork also adorned the interior — she draws a lot at home.
Sometimes I start with ten sketches at once: I draw or cut out shapes from paper. Then I move around the house and ‘try them on’ in different spots, like assembling a puzzle. Eventually, each piece finds its perfect place.

According to Emilia, the apartment’s atmosphere brings her happiness and peace — exactly what she dreamed of. This is influenced not only by the calm color palette but also by most items being made from natural wood, and the coziness brought in by textiles: carpets, cushions, throws, and light, unobtrusive curtains in the bedroom and child’s room.
