How to Choose Window Blinds for Office or Home
If not so long ago window blinds were mainly used in offices, with the advent of new technologies and materials they are now more frequently used in apartments and private homes as an alternative to traditional fabric curtains. The variety offered on the market is extensive and diverse, with the main challenge being choosing the right blinds that frame and enhance windows in spaces of various purposes.
General Principles for Selecting Window Blinds
First of all, it should be noted that there are two ways to install window blinds:
- installation within the window opening,
- attachment to wall or ceiling.
In the first case, horizontal or roller blinds are most commonly used, while in the second, blinds made of freely hanging vertical slats are preferred. The second method is particularly suitable for large rooms, where every centimeter of space is not a major concern.
The second key point: plan in advance how (in which direction) the blinds will open. While horizontal and roller blinds typically only open upward, vertical blinds offer multiple options. The slats can slide to the left, to the right, from the center outward, or toward the center.
And third: the quality of the mechanisms controlling slat rotation and blind opening. A good mechanism should not jam or squeak. All operations should be smooth and require minimal effort.
Features of Choosing Blinds for Different Rooms
Office Spaces and Medical FacilitiesOffice interiors do not emphasize designer flair or individuality. Therefore, the main requirements for these structures are simple and logical:
- practicality,
- simplicity and low cost,
- easy maintenance,
- long service life.
Most often, vertical blinds with solid-colored fabric or plastic slats are selected to meet these needs. In companies that care about their image, logos may be printed on such blinds, clearly visible from the street.
As for medical facilities, hygiene standards are critical. Aluminum or plastic blinds are ideal, as they meet sanitary regulations (SanPiN), are easy to clean, and allow for complete blackout.
Choosing Blinds for Apartments or HomesWhen selecting blinds for windows, the overall interior style and the homeowner’s personal taste play a key role. The intended function of each room is also considered. For example, in living rooms and bedrooms, a combination of cozy fabric curtains and roller blinds is often used, offering protection from intense sunlight.
For kitchens, roller or horizontal blinds installed directly against the window are ideal. They keep the entire windowsill free and save space in compact kitchens. As in medical facilities, and for the same hygiene reasons, plastic or aluminum are typically chosen as materials.
Finally, on dimensions: even a few centimeters can make a difference. For example, if a floor-length option is preferred but falls short by just 3–4 cm, the blinds will look no better than slightly too-short trousers. Also note: vertical blinds look most effective when their width in the open position is twice the width of the window opening.
