How to Choose the Perfect Kitchen Sink: 8 Tips
After you have chosen the location for the sink, its width and depth, and decided whether you want a double or single basin, you need to decide what material it will be made of. Usually we imagine how the sink will fit into the design, but appearance is not the most important characteristic. We asked designer and blogger Anastasia Ramazanova to share what to consider when choosing a kitchen sink.
Anastasia Ramazanova Designer, Blogger Creates design projects remotely and in person, runs a blog where she shares useful and practical tips
Most Capricious: Made of StoneKitchen sinks made of artificial stone are often seen in projects, but they have one major drawback — they absorb dirt. No matter how much cleaning product for stone you buy or how often you scrub the sink, it will never look pristine again. Such a sink will look untidy, especially if it's light-colored. If you want artificial stone and only that, choose a dark stone imitation from reputable brands. Decent sinks made of artificial stone in the budget category — Polygran M. I tested it myself in two apartments.
Most Practical: Made of Stainless SteelStainless steel is the easiest to maintain. Plus, you won't accidentally break your favorite porcelain set on it. Two of my favorite brands are Blanco and Omoikiri. Yes, they're not cheap, but they're worth it. The ideal option for a stainless steel sink is one that's glued to the countertop from below. But this option isn't suitable for all countertops. If you choose a mounted stainless steel sink, pay attention to the edge profile. It should be minimalistic.
Design: Maria PolyanskayaPhoto: Yuri GrishkoMost Durable: Made of Matte SteelThis steel is also stainless steel. But it doesn't scratch, and water spots from hard water are less visible on it. They look somewhat plastic-like. But they work great, for example, in a rental apartment or cottage (not too expensive to lose). Or if practicality is more important to you than appearance. Or simply because you love matte textures.
IKEASome of the Most Beautiful: Made of CeramicThere are very impressive deep ceramic sinks, like from an American movie. A dream! But in my opinion, their practicality is questionable. They take up a lot of space. There's a risk they might crack. These sinks should only be installed if you have a strong desire for one!
What to Consider When Choosing a Sink?✓ Built-in dispenser for cleaning products. And no more bottles of Fairy!
✓ A cutting board can be placed on the sink. It can cover the sink itself, not just the food preparation area.
✓ There are various organizers for storing sponges and cloths. For example, from the brand Joseph & Joseph.
✓ A useful item is a colander, which is convenient for thawing food or quickly rinsing dishes. Water drains directly into the drain.
