Bathroom Like in a Hotel: Ideas You Can Implement at Home

Colored grout, a large mirror, and other simple solutions. Adapt them for bathrooms in your home

We selected seven hotels designed with attention to comfort and aesthetics. Rooms and lobbies are worth exploring during leisure time, but now the focus is on bathrooms — that is, approaches to their decoration. We collected the most universal solutions: they will work for a guest bathroom in a country house and for a small bathroom in a Khrushchyovka flat.

"Living" Bathroom

In the bio-hotel Gut Sonnenhausen near Munich, the washbasin area is located right in the room and serves as an extension of the interior. Here, there's a wooden mirror, a fishing lamp, and a vanity table that is easier to imagine in a hallway than in a bathroom. Still, it's worth trying in practice — the approach is very cozy.

In such "living" bathrooms, tiles are laid only in the "wet" zones. Other walls are painted with moisture-resistant paint, for example, a cool beige tone, as shown here.

Unusual Vanity Unit

Careful: this solution will draw all the attention to itself! But the rest of the interior can be chosen neutral. Imagine a bathroom in the Parisian hotel Le Belleval without botanical tile motifs — the interior is not less interesting, right? (We don’t have anything against tiles — we also like them very much).

How to Replicate It?

A similar vanity unit is available from Duravit. For the German brand, it was designed by Philippe Starck, and one must note that the signature style of this legendary Frenchman is clearly visible in the design.

The vanity unit is slightly over a meter long, so that together with the washbasin, a toothbrush cup, soap dish, and other essentials can fit. The lower shelf can hold towels and cosmetics, and under it, you can place a scale or slippers. Some also say that vanity units are impractical!

If a plain white vanity unit seems too conservative, there are four finishing options to choose from.

Colored Walls + Colored Grout

Look at the upper parts of the walls in the bathrooms of the Condominio Monti hotel in Rome. There, it’s slightly visible that the tiles were laid not to the ceiling but to the door height level, and then the wall was painted with paint and grout was chosen in a matching tone. The approach is not new, but it always looks fresh.

Large Mirror

The rooms in the boutique hotel Redstone in Riga are monochrome, in blue, pink, and milk tones. The bathrooms look doll-like, and everything should be noted there: printed ceramic tiles on the floor, interesting lights, and large monochrome tiles against the painted walls in the washbasin area.

But we suggest paying attention to the idea of a large round mirror. Play with scale: place something of the same shape but small next to it, for example, a mini washbasin and a wall light, as done here.

How to Replicate It?

In the line of plumbing fixtures, furniture, and accessories from Happy D 2 Plus, Duravit, there are great round mirrors — just the ones we need.

There are models in two sizes — 700 and 900 mm in diameter. Both variants come with backlighting and smart control. The mirrors feature defogging function for fogged glass and atmospheric lighting mode.

For those who paint directly in the bathroom, there is a useful option — color adjustment. The backlight can be set to warm or cool glow.

Retro Look

Modern classicism will not surprise anyone today, but authentic retro is rare in bathrooms. If this aesthetic is close to you, explore the solutions in the bathrooms of the Sanders hotel in Copenhagen. Here are four ideas worth noting: vintage mixers, a mirror with markings, small tiles with decorative inserts on the floor, and, of course, a classic console washbasin.

Freestanding Bathtub

When the Dolomites are visible from the window, you don’t have to overthink the design. However, the project studio Peter Pichler Architecture thought differently and came up with many great ideas for bathrooms in hotel rooms.

We like the wooden shelf-ladder for bathroom accessories. As for the floor-mounted washbasin with mixers mounted from the wall with a mirrored surface, we don’t like it because it’s effective but impractical: you’ll constantly have to wipe water droplets off the mirror.

One idea from this hotel that’s worth choosing is a freestanding bathtub — who hasn’t dreamed of such? We suggest considering options without legs, like here — then you won’t have to clean hard-to-reach areas under the tub.

How to Replicate It?

The ideal solution for implementing this idea in real life was created by Danish designer Sissel Malling for Duravit. In the line of plumbing fixtures, furniture, and accessories called Luv, there are classic freestanding tubs and convenient wall-mounted hybrids. These tubs fit snugly against the wall, and water doesn’t spill into distant corners of the room.

The tubs are made from composite material DuraSolid®, featuring beautiful thin walls and flawless geometric shapes. Sissel equipped them with a sound system with Bluetooth — for everyone who doesn’t want to part with their favorite music even during bath time.

Focus on Concrete

That this bathroom from the minimalist hotel Bursa in Kyiv is obvious from the text on the mirror’s backlight. The designers who decorated the hotel rooms correctly noted: concrete is an excellent companion for minimalist interiors. Choose microconcrete if you have the budget for finishing, or ceramic tiles in a concrete style if you need a more affordable option.
