Changing the mood of a room with lighting is easy. We share tips on which lights to buy and where to place them

The living room is a gathering place for the whole family, and it's important to plan not only comfortable spots for relaxation but also lighting in different zones. Together with Leroy Merlin experts, we explain which lights to choose to add warmth to the living room interior.

Lighting of Different Sizes

Consider the shape and size of the room: in a large space, there should be more light sources. If the apartment has low ceilings, avoid heavy pendant chandeliers and lights. If the ceilings are high, feel free to choose larger options.

Lighting for Reading

Table lamps help make the room feel bigger and cozier, and eliminate dark corners. Plan a floor lamp next to each armchair outside the sofa area — just in case you want to read a book or work on a laptop.

Wall Lights in the Relaxation Zone

Focus on localized lighting: usually in the living room people read books and talk in a family circle. Hang wall sconces with an extended base, shade, or crystal pendants above the sofa — they not only provide comfortable lighting but also make the setting cozier. Never leave a light fixture without a shade: it will look unfinished, and bright light from an uncovered bulb can irritate the eyes.

Soft Lighting from Lamps

Table lamps can be paired if placed at the edges of a shelf, console, or on identical stands on both sides of the sofa. The diffused light from them won't suit for working, but it will create a cozy atmosphere. Choose models with interesting shapes and designer shades — additional decor won't be out of place.

Decorative Lighting for Mood

Not all lights in the room need to be functional: sometimes purely decorative light sources are needed to create a relaxing atmosphere. For example, fun table lamps, candle-shaped bulbs in bottles, and lanterns that mimic candlelight.
