Professionals share tips on how to decorate the Christmas tree, set the table, and what taboos exist in New Year's decoration

We asked designers to share their favorite New Year traditions and tips for creating a festive atmosphere – here's what came out.

Yelena Zhdanova

Yelena Zhdanova welcomes the New Year at the dacha among loved ones and friends. The Christmas tree is only real. The designer recommends adding shimmer and sparkle in the 1980s style to your New Year's decor – and your Christmas tree will become the trendiest of the year. To create a festive mood, Yelena recommends dressing up the chandelier!

Tatiana Gorkova

Gold is in fashion, believes Tatiana Gorkova and suggests decorating the Christmas tree with golden tinsel and red balls. For the New Year's table, try adding an ikebana made of fir branches and toys – it will also fill the house with a pine scent.

Nailya Zотова

Nailya Zотова also supports a live tree and decoration in gold and silver tones. The taboos in New Year's décor are only boredom and dullness. For gift wrapping, Nailya recommends using wallpaper – you can find the most unusual prints that you won't see in gift wrapping paper.

Mike Shilov

One of the world’s best designers according to Architectural Digest suggests keeping New Year's decoration in muted tones: ochre-yellow, calm green, smoky gray, and slate. Do not mix gold with silver on the table and don’t overdo it with decor.

Marina Zhukova

Marina Zhukova prefers artificial fir trees, complementing them with compositions made of fresh branches. Add the main tone of the past year to gold – greenery. The taboos in New Year's decor are black color: replace it with blue or dark red.

Decorate the tree with toys from your childhood, and also candies and gingerbread. Candles on the table create a real holiday atmosphere. It's better to use regular unscented candles, as the main scent of the New Year is the smell of fir.

For interior decoration, use no more than three colors – the starting point can be your festive outfit. For the tree, choose a garland with small lights that highlight the tree and its shape.

Inspired by a recent sea voyage, Katerina decided to decorate the house in a coastal style this year and showed how to do it. For example, take mother-of-pearl, yellow, coral, and all shades of the sea as a base.

Stepan Bugayev

Stepan Bugayev prefers live trees but without harming nature: this time he bought a small tree in a pot to plant it on the dacha plot after the holidays. Stepan also believes that New Year is exactly the time to replenish your home collection with expensive accessories, make long-awaited purchases, and change temporary items for permanent ones.

Oksana Panteleeva

Oksana is sure that it doesn’t matter where to celebrate the New Year, but who you're with. In the Moscow apartment of the designer, the tree is decorated well before the holiday, so it's artificial. In the countryside with parents, there's always a live one – full of cones and childhood scent.

Olga Kulikovskaya-Eshbi

Olga has already taught her British family Russian traditions: for example, burning paper with wishes under the chimes of the clock. In New Year's decoration, the designer also prefers everything classic: green tree, golden accents, gingerbread houses, and soft toys with British symbolism.
