How to Visually Raise the Ceiling: 7 Designer Tips
One of the most common problems in modern housing — low ceilings. They create a pressing feeling and visually reduce even spacious rooms. It's clear that it's impossible to actually increase the height of ceilings in a standard apartment. However, you can use certain decorator techniques in interior design that will visually raise the ceiling.
1. Striped Wallpaper and Tall White Doors
Stripes can be either narrow colored or wide in neutral tones. Vertical patterns alone beautifully lift the ceiling. Adding tall white doors to this creates a double effect: walls appear visually elongated, and the ceiling seems higher.
2. Mirror Inserts
What better expands space, adds depth and volume? Of course, mirrors! These can be narrow mirrors from floor to ceiling, large-format panels highlighting zones in the room (such as a fireplace), or even a mirror ceiling. The key is to choose the right placement for mirrors during the design project and plan lighting well.
3. Tall Bookshelves and Floor-to-Ceiling Curtains
Even in a tiny living room, you can find space for a bookcase reaching the ceiling. This structure doesn't take up much room and, together with floor-to-ceiling curtains, creates the necessary verticality.
4. Dark Floors and Light Walls
If none of the previous tips suit you, try «extending» the walls to the ceiling. How? By using a wide connecting cornice that visually reduces the ceiling area and increases wall height. Choose dark-colored flooring – this makes the floor area seem smaller, which also adds height to the room.
5. Wide Molding Extending Beyond the Ceiling
A wide cornice is another good option for apartments with low ceilings. The eye perceives the molding as part of the wall, not noticing that it continues beyond the ceiling. Thanks to this visual trick, the room appears higher than it actually is.
6. Good Insulation
The optimal solution for private homes is floor-to-ceiling windows, while for standard apartments, designers recommend choosing tall glass doors. The larger the glazed area, the better.
7. Vertical Dividers
Even partition walls can benefit a room with low ceilings. However, they must meet special requirements: they should reach the ceiling, feature vertical decoration, and have good light transmittance. Additionally, partitions must be skillfully combined with furniture and other interior elements.
