Most modern baseboards are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), commonly known as 'plastic'. PVC is highly malleable and easy to work with (cutting, drilling, etc.).

Therefore, when installing any PVC product, the main question becomes: how to install it without damaging?

Modern baseboards consist of two components: the main body and a special 'groove' – cable channel. Previously, solid baseboards without internal cable routing were popular, but they have long been replaced by modern plastic baseboards with integrated cable channels. Although installing solid baseboards differs from traditional methods, we focus here on the latter.

Preparation Phase

Preparing for installing a plastic baseboard involves cutting it to the room’s dimensions. Standard baseboard length is 2.5 meters. Since room perimeters are rarely exact multiples of this length, one baseboard must be trimmed.

Trimming should leave a 5 mm gap on both sides near the wall junctions. This gap allows for installing matching corner fittings (internal or external). All fittings are made from PVC and match the baseboard’s color palette.

It should be noted that, besides internal and external corners, baseboard fittings also include connecting elements for joining two baseboards on straight wall sections, and end caps installed on both sides of door openings.

Mounting the Baseboards

Mounting involves carefully drilling holes into both the baseboard (main body) and the wall. Hole spacing ranges from 30 to 50 cm, depending on wall flatness—closer spacing is needed on uneven walls to prevent gaps and voids between the baseboard’s back and the wall.

All mounting points will be hidden after installing the second component—the cable channel. It can be inserted into the middle of the baseboard or snapped on top via a locking mechanism.

For beginners, here are a few practical tips to ensure a tight fit against both wall and floor, preventing gaps and ensuring a seamless appearance.

It’s common for both wall and floor dimensions to vary slightly. This is especially true for mass-produced Soviet-era apartments and modern homes built by various construction companies (DSCs), as current SNiP standards allow for some tolerance in concrete panel dimensions, reducing pressure on manufacturers to ensure precision.

To ensure a tight fit against both surfaces, when installing each mounting point, gently pull the baseboard forward along the wall using your right hand, and adjust slightly downward if the floor level drops. It’s not necessary to keep all mounting points perfectly level—1–2 mm up or down is invisible after installation, but it helps avoid visible gaps.
