Laying Down Carpet Roll by Yourself
Modern carpet roll is highly diverse in appearance, manufacturing method, and composition. You can choose material with short or long pile, synthetic acrylic or nylon, or even noble natural wool. But merely purchasing a material that meets your standards in quality and design isn't enough.
You must also install it correctly. Despite its apparent simplicity, installing this floor covering has its nuances.
Preparing the Floor Surface for Carpet Roll Installation
Regardless of the method you choose, begin with preparing the surface where the material will be laid. It goes without saying that the floor must be level.
If you're installing carpet roll over a special underlay or have chosen a thick-based material, you don't need to aim for a perfectly flat surface beneath the covering.
Move the roll of carpet roll into the room in advance and unroll it to eliminate all creases and waves.

Beginner-Friendly Method
If you decide to install the carpet roll without adhesive or special underlay, minimal effort is required. Simply trim excess material with a sharp knife, then secure it along the perimeter using baseboards.
This method works best in relatively small rooms. Additionally, if the purchased floor covering is too elastic, wrinkles and waves may appear during use.
You can avoid such issues by using double-sided adhesive tape during installation. The tape is laid along the perimeter, near doors and wall protrusions, and across the floor in a grid pattern with 50 cm spacing.
In this case, the secured carpet roll is less prone to bubbling. This method is especially effective on smooth floors (tile, parquet, laminate).
If You're a Pro...
If you're meticulous and strive for perfection, the best approach is full adhesion to the base. In this case, the cut-to-size piece is folded in half, pile side inward, to free up the work area.
A thin layer of chosen adhesive is applied to the floor using a notched trowel. After waiting a few minutes, press the carpet roll firmly onto the surface. Begin from the center and work toward the edges, gently stretching it. To ensure proper adhesion, you can use a common household item like a heavy iron.
After one half is firmly attached, proceed to the other half, repeating the process.
If you need to join two pieces, overlap them without applying adhesive to the base. Cut both pieces simultaneously using a sharp tool and a long metal ruler as a guide.
After removing the trimmings, apply adhesive to the floor and press the cut edges together. If done carefully, the seam will be nearly invisible.
Only for True Experts
The most revolutionary method for laying carpet roll, invented in the UK and still relatively uncommon here, is stretching (stretching). This technique uses special bars (grips) with two rows of angled nails.
Grips are placed around the entire perimeter, with nails pointing toward the wall. The carpet roll is secured to the grips, gradually stretched using a specialized tool (power stretcher). Work proceeds from one corner outward.
This method produces a perfectly flat, taut surface, and the carpet roll slightly springs underfoot. Grips are very durable. You can easily replace the covering later by securing a new piece to the same location.
