How to Do Cosmetic Bedroom Renovation: 8 Key Tips
Update your bedroom design without a significant budget hit. We've gathered practical tips that will helpnot only solve the decoration problem but also make your bedroom more comfortable
A bedroom in an urban apartment is not just a place to sleep, but a cozy fortress where you can hide from the hustle and bustle of the day. That's why defects in bedroom finishing bother us especially strongly: cracks on the ceiling, imperfect walls and clutter make it hard to relax and fully restore your energy. In fact, most interior problems in the bedroom can be solved without a significant budget hit. We've compiled 7 practical tips that will help you not only visually update your bedroom but also make it more comfortable.
1. Hide Cracks on the Ceiling
Cracks in a painted ceiling can be filled with spackle or hidden using ready-made molding panels: light and elegant, they securely attach even to uneven surfaces. Planning to repaint the ceiling? First, you'll need to cover the cracks with the same spackle, then apply the coating from the window: the first layer – perpendicular to the light direction, the second – parallel.
For particularly severe cases, there are suspended ceilings – they take up only 5 centimeters of room height, so they're suitable even in Khrushchyovkas, and don't require messy work.

2. Get Rid of Scratches on the Floor
Removing a small scratch on linoleum is very simple: gently rub the edges with the edge of a coin and cover the damage with wax crayon.
Worn spots on wooden floors covered with oil or wax can be fixed locally: remove the protective layer from one parquet element, cover the damage with special wood putty and reapply the coating. If the floor is lacquered, you'll have to sand and renew the protective coating throughout the room.
Heavily worn flooring doesn't have to be removed: you can lay laminate or parquet boards floating on top (though they won't be sandable in this case).

3. Partially Update the Walls
Wall finishing usually wears unevenly. To save budget and effort, update the coating only partially: for example, leave wallpaper on the upper half of the wall and paint the lower part in tone with the wallpaper pattern.
If the finish is damaged near the headboard, hide wall defects using a high bed back: it can be custom-made from wooden panels, upholstered with fabric, or even made as a unique handmade variant from an old door.

4. Plan the Placement of Power Outlets
With each passing year, there are more and more electrical appliances in apartments, which means we need to think about new outlets. In a bedroom, they are necessary near the headboard, at least for charging a phone and plugging in a night light. To move an outlet, run the wire under the baseboard or hide it under a cable channel, and cover the old socket with a plug or decoration.

5. Organize the Window Sill
In small apartments, window sills are used for growing flowers and storing books, arranging decor, and even setting up a workspace. It's no surprise that the surface wears out quickly, but before replacing the window sill, try a budget-friendly solution. The first option is to laminate the window sill with decorative film in a color and pattern of your choice. Before laminating, you'll need to spackle all cracks on the window sill and clean the surface.
The second method is to order a plastic overlay, which is more wear-resistant than film. Another option is to pour the window sill with liquid acrylic, though this work should be left to a professional.

6. Fix Furniture Defects
There are several ways to get rid of scratches on wooden surfaces. Small cuts can easily be filled with the pulp of a walnuts: the grooves will fill with walnut oils, and the scratch will become less noticeable. Chips and scratches on cabinet furniture made of MDF, particle board, or solid wood can be fixed with soft furniture wax or special furniture markers.
Discolored furniture can be restored on your own. To do this, remove the old polish with a solvent, paint the surface with alkyd or acrylic paint, and after it dries, treat it with clear lacquer. There is also a less labor-intensive option – cover the furniture surface with self-adhesive film.

7. Add Color
Often bedrooms are decorated in neutral beige tones: on one hand, this color sets a tone for rest, and on the other – it quickly becomes boring, seeming lifeless. To diversify the color palette and hide small finishing defects, decorate the bedroom interior with bright details: choose a blanket, decorative pillows, and curtains in one tone or hang colorful paintings and photos.

8. Tidy Up
Deep down, everyone loves order, but not everyone can boast that after a hard day's work they neatly fold their clothes in the closet and never leave them in the bedroom. Hang a clothing hook on the wall (to avoid drilling, you can use liquid nails) or place a sideboard – much easier than breaking established habits. For storing blankets and pillows, wide flat boxes will do, which easily fit under the bed.
