Bathroom Waterproofing
Its negative effects harm the structural elements of the bathroom, significantly accelerating corrosion and deterioration of floors, walls, and ceilings, especially those with a concrete base.
To avoid problems caused by moisture, it is recommended to perform bathroom waterproofing, which will help:
- protect structural components and increase their strength and reliability;
- extend the service life of plumbing equipment;
- protect adjacent rooms from leaks.
Materials Used
Today, manufacturers offer a wide range of waterproofing materials that can be used to complete all tasks independently. Generally, two main types are distinguished: sheet (membrane) and coating materials.
Coating waterproofing materials include special mastics, pastes, dry and liquid mixtures. They are the most common due to several advantages:
- high cost-effectiveness;
- usable in rooms with very high humidity;
- compatible with various surface types;
- excellent adhesion to the base;
- ease of application;
- long service life.
Several types of coating materials exist: cement-polymer (powders or emulsions); bitumen-rubber and bitumen-polymer mastics.
Sheet waterproofing materials consist of glass fiber or polyester fabrics treated with bitumen. Usually sold in rolls. Available with self-adhesive backing or fixed by heat fusion. The use of sheet waterproofing has advantages (easy installation, low cost) and disadvantages (labor-intensive surface preparation for a smooth finish, strong odor).
Preparation Work
To achieve maximum waterproofing effectiveness, proper surface preparation is essential. Steps include:
- thoroughly removing old paint, dirt, and dust from floors and walls;
- grinding uneven areas over 2.0 mm and filling cracks and holes with putty to surface level;
- applying waterproofing primers or paints to surfaces;
- thoroughly wetting concrete or plastered floors and walls with cold water just before applying waterproofing.
Waterproofing the Bathroom with Coating Materials
Ready-made waterproofing emulsions, mastics, or dry-mix solutions must be thoroughly stirred. Depending on consistency, application tools include brushes, rollers, or rectangular trowels. Coating waterproofing materials are applied in one to three layers, allowing each layer to dry completely.
Layers must be even, with thickness ranging from 1.0 mm to 3.0 mm depending on consistency. Special attention should be given to joints, pipe penetrations, holes, and corners.
Waterproofing the Bathroom with Sheet Materials
Roll-based material is cut into required pieces (strips). If self-adhesive, remove the protective film first, then apply to the prepared surface. For non-adhesive types, place the strip on the surface and heat it. Use a rubber roller to press the strip firmly for better adhesion.
Joint seams are sealed with special tape or sealed with sealant (polyurethane or silicone). All corners, holes, and points where pipes or electrical wiring exit walls and floors are treated similarly. Ensure no area remains uncovered by waterproofing material.
Finishing the Bathroom After Waterproofing
After all bathroom surfaces are coated with waterproofing material, allow it to dry. Drying time for coating mixtures typically does not exceed 24 hours. After drying, you can proceed with tiling, PVC panels, or other suitable finishing materials.
