Vanoosh Residence Cottage by 35-51 Architecture Office

The Vanoosh Residence is a modern cottage designed by 35-51 Architecture Office. It is located in the city of Royan, Iran. The design of this cottage represents a wonderful blend of traditional Iranian architecture and contemporary architecture, similar to what was achieved in the Dasht e Chehel cottage by the same studio.

Traditional Iranian architecture has taught us to create spaces that are safe, flexible and adaptable to the needs of residents. Contemporary architecture has taught us to eliminate unnecessary architectural elements and lifestyle components. It also allows adding something to the form where needed for the residents' lifestyle. The Vanoosh Residence is an attempt to bring these lessons into reality; it's also vital to consider the perception and reality of staff needs: 1. We should not be limited by the cottage's area. 2. A safe room (due to a large number of guests) 3. Privacy

Firstly, to meet these requirements, a dispersed and separate structure was used to form the overall layout of the cottage. Thus, instead of having a single cottage on one part of the plot, we designed its different spaces separately in several points of the plot relatively far from each other. Secondly, these diverse spaces were reduced to three main zones: a cooking area, a sleeping area and a gathering space. Thirdly, each of these functions has its own independent identity while being connected through certain corridors.

These corridors feature flexible walls that can be removed during moderate seasons and enhance the sense of separation between components. Moreover, using removable walls in main areas further strengthens this feeling of isolation. These parts are designed to provide optimal ventilation and allow prevailing winds from the northwest to cool the entire house in summer. All this aims at achieving a 'inside-out' lifestyle that is both new and rooted in our tradition.

In response to the employer's request for a safe room, it was designed as a small independent cottage. This cottage is planned and placed in such a way to be less noticeable. Separate parts of the cottage are arranged to create cozy and introverted spaces for ensuring resident privacy. Additionally, extending a semi-open roof over the project is another attempt to strengthen privacy and serves as an excellent place for climbing plants, especially in the mild and humid climate of northern Iran where our project is located. This green roof expands the building into its surrounding environment. It can be said that we sought to create private spaces open to nature and the environment. It opens to welcome you, and closes to protect.
