Tigz Hill Remodelled House | Architect Vanessa Vigneron | Newcastle, Australia
Reviving Newcastle's Treasure Through Reuse and Renewal
Previously a simple cottage, the Tigz Hill Remodelled House, was transformed into a vibrant and sustainable family home through meticulous renovation under the guidance of Architect Vanessa Vigneron. Located in Tigz Hill Newcastle, the project became a true collaboration between architect Vanessa Vigneron and owner-builder Matt Vigneron, combining craftsmanship, eco-friendliness, and deep respect for the site's history.
Transforming a Cottage with Sustainable Design
The task was clear: transform the small, old cottage with a deteriorating 1960s rear addition into a modern, well-lit home for a family of four.
"Our goal was to create a functional, comfortable family home that maximizes the view of the park and makes full use of existing materials," explains Vanessa Vigneron. The result is a house that effortlessly connects old-world charm with modern sustainability, where every design choice supports longevity and environmental responsibility.
Preserving Heritage, Expanding Horizons
The project retains the original facade, keeping its modest street appearance, while a new modern addition opens up at the back. The new two-level family retreat offers a view of an expansive relaxation area, enhancing natural ventilation and visual connection. The gable roof, echoing the shape of the original cottage, accommodates solar panels on the north side and channels abundant light into the interior.
From the street, the house remains unassuming and blends with its surroundings – but inside it unfolds magnificently, filled with texture, space, and light.
Smart Solutions: Green Roof and Future Flexibility
At the back lies a remodelled brick garage with a green roof, providing privacy and functionality while adhering to circular economy principles. Currently used as a workshop, it was designed as a flexible structure that could become a small café or studio in the future – opening directly onto the adjacent park and connecting the house to its community.
"The green roof became a defining element," says Vigneron. "We kept the low profile, planted succulents selected by landscape designer Linda Ross – they thrive in the sun and beautifully complement the landscape."
Material Reuse and Craftsmanship
Sustainability underpins every detail. Reclaimed wood from the demolished extension was used to create custom bathrooms and furniture. The original terrace countertops were preserved and reimagined as a bathroom sink, supported by reclaimed steel bases. New Blackbutt wood floors, also recycled, add warmth and consistency throughout the home.
Even the landscaping reflects a resource-saving approach: palm trees rescued from a neighboring plot now flourish in the garden, reinforcing the concept of renewal.
A Home with Honor and Intention
The Tigz Hill Remodelled House demonstrates how architecture can honor the past while embracing the future. Its layered color palette, adaptable spaces, and energy-efficient strategies reflect the family's deep connection to place and their goals.
Through careful design and personal craftsmanship, Architect Vanessa Vigneron created a home that is simultaneously eco-friendly and emotionally meaningful – an authentic example of sustainable urban renovation in Australia.
