Modern Rural House by Sudaiva Studio: A Countryside Retreat Combining Traditions and Modernity
Roots in Landscape and Culture
Located in Yenagunta, India, the modern rural house by Sudaiva Studio is more than just family housing—it's a dialogue between architecture, nature, and spirituality. Commissioned by a farmer for his extended family, the concept aligns with Vastu Shastra principles, responding to both cultural and ecological context of the site.
Surrounded by sacred Pipul trees, and facing the Lakshmi Narasimha Swami Temple, the house embraces its surroundings with reverence. Its L-shaped configuration frames these views, while the curved garden path, water elements and tropical landscaping solutions seamlessly integrate the dwelling into the rural setting.
Architectural Concept
Spanning 6000 square feet, the house combines modern lines with influences from medieval architecture. Horizontal planes, glass facades, and projecting roof overhangs define the form, creating openness while providing shade. The use of white brick cladding, neat aluminum windows, and reclaimed Thai wooden panels evokes modern purity as well as temple motifs, especially alluding to intricate carvings on nearby shrines.
The house program develops organically:
-
An open living and dining area connecting to a terrace overlooking a natural pond surrounded by local boulders.
-
Bedrooms, including the son's mezzanine bedroom, maximize views of the green surroundings.
-
Service and private zones are oriented for privacy while maintaining permeability to the landscape.
Materials and Craftsmanship
The materiality gives the project a cultural and regional foundation:
-
Reclaimed Thai panels enhance ventilation and texture, combining craftsmanship with sustainability.
-
Local Indian stones, such as Kota and Jaisalmer, define the floors, adding warmth and durability.
-
Native plants and water features strengthen the connection between house and rural landscape.
The interplay of textures—wood, stone, glass and water—creates a serene atmosphere reflecting both agricultural practicality and architectural elegance.
A Community Hub
Beyond its role as private housing, the modern rural house has become a village hub. Temple dwellers visit it for its peaceful gardens and distinctive design, turning the house into a community interaction point. It embodies not only domestic living but also shared cultural and spiritual experiences, bridging areas of ritual, landscape, and contemporary architecture.
