La Baie de l'Ours House by ACDF Architecture: Wooden Cottage on Lake Shore in Quebec
Located on the pristine shores of Lake Arshambo in Saint-Donat-de-Montcalm, Quebec, the La Baie de l'Ours house is a striking retreat designed by ACDF Architecture. The house is a masterful solution for harsh terrain, combining panoramic views, privacy and materials deeply rooted in nature.
Location and Concept
Situated on a former summer camp site, the house uses the naturally open landscape and carefully preserves surrounding vegetation and rocky outcrops. The project is built around a strong dialogue between water, horizon and forest, allowing owners to fully immerse themselves in the beauty of nature without compromising privacy.
Three Separate Layers
The house is organized into three complementary architectural layers:
Wooden frame and coffered ceiling: A monumental wooden roof with deep overhangs protects the living areas and terraces, creating dramatic projections that combine protection and openness.
Stone walls: Fixed on a rocky foundation, structural stone elements reflect the natural topography and support the roof, forming circulation zones.
Dark wooden volumes: Compact, private (suite) areas with wood finishes provide a cozy family retreat contrasting the openness of central zones.
This three-part composition balances transparency and seclusion, offering wide views of the lake while maintaining discretion from nearby trails and structures.
Layout and Program
The main center consists of the living area, dining room and kitchen oriented west, opening directly onto Lake Arshambo. The private wings on the east and north house the main bedroom, children's rooms with bathrooms and guest accommodations. The multimedia room and cozy lounge with a central fireplace create warm, flexible spaces within the open layout.
Materials
Warm wooden panels, natural stone and dark wood define the tranquil style of the house. Extensive glazing emphasizes water and forest, while covered terraces and outdoor zones extend interior space into the landscape. Materials were chosen for their durability and ability to harmonize with the surrounding environment.
Outdoor Recreation and Landscape
The project emphasizes outdoor recreation with expansive terraces and sheltered balconies that seamlessly connect to trails and the shoreline. Stone landscape architecture integrates the house with natural topography, softening transitions between architecture and wilderness.
Private Retreat
The La Baie de l'Ours house is more than just a family home; it's an architectural statement on balance: where bold roof forms and structural clarity are combined with warmth, intimacy and respect for nature. It embodies ACDF's philosophy in designing spaces that embrace contrast, heritage and harmony with place.
