Swarga House in Cilimous from PSA Studio: Floating Villa Among Rice Fields
Located among rice fields in Cilimous, West Java, Indonesia, the Swarga House by PSA Studio offers a modern sanctuary designed to embrace the captivating landscape of Mount Ciremai. Completed in 2022, this 2970 square foot villa is created as a retreat from Jakarta's hustle, just three hours away, while maintaining deep respect for the rural environment.
Location and Program
The villa is situated on a 2300 m² rice field within a rural settlement. To minimize its impact, the house is designed as a thin linear volume, matching the width of the plot, ensuring each room has a direct view of the mountain while preserving the agricultural setting.
Orientations and Layout
The house is oriented to maximize natural light and uninterrupted panoramic views.
-
The mountain-facing side is wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass walls, providing spacious vistas of Ciremai.
-
The street-facing side is protected by a continuous clay roof, ensuring privacy and visual harmony with the surrounding rural architecture.
This duality creates a balance between openness to the landscape and protection from public space.
Modern Tropical Design
A single curved clay roof unifies all functions in one form, stretching from the foyer and pond through the dining room and kitchen to the bedrooms. The building is elevated above ground level, creating the sensation of floating over rice fields, improving ventilation and durability in a tropical climate.
Material Palette
The project uses honest, local materials:
-
Clay tile roofing reflects traditional rural homes.
-
Steel structures ensure fast and efficient assembly.
-
Glass facades dissolve boundaries with nature.
-
Concrete floors and walls provide strength and simplicity.
Each material is presented in its natural form, celebrating both traditions and modernity.
Villa Rooted in Place
The Swarga House is not just a morning sanctuary but also a thoughtfully designed architectural solution — a bridge between modern design and local vernacular construction. Integrating traditional materials, contemporary solutions, and a floating form that respects the agricultural environment, PSA Studio created a villa that inspires while deeply rooted in its setting.
